Printouts have horizontal banding
I have a Canon MG 2220 printer.
I have having problems with my printouts having horizontal bands across them. I have cleaned heads using CUPS. I also just physically cleaned the printer heads. There was a lot of ink and some was pooled on the bottom of printer. I refill my cartridges. Picture of printout is here. https://www.dropbox.com/s/4i8eveduag...nding.png?dl=0 thanks, Andy |

Typical inkjet cartridges have tens to hundreds of holes that spray the liquid onto the paper. The holes are just a few microns in diameter. The colors on the the dropbox photo appear to be ok. It's the black that is not spraying correctly. Try a spraying / printing only one color at a time. My guess is that pure c, m, y, will not have banding but pure black will. |

Either the pattern is related to the print head, or there's a "flat spot" on some roller or platen in there. One interesting twist on your test picture, is the edges of the "box diagram", the less intense printed areas on the edge of the box are missing the banding. But it can't be ink starvation, because the change is so abrupt from streaked to not streaked. "All the colors" shouldn't be doing that. It looks to me like K is the missing out (out of CMYK). K is the black one. And I don't think you always mix K with the other colors, to modulate the color, as that would throw the color rendering off. At least some of the colors, should turn on just that color. The test images the printer makes, it should be selected saturated single gun colors for at least some of its color rows. Another thing you can think about - listen to the sound the printer makes while it is printing. Does the sound the printer makes, correlate to the damaged print appearance. It shouldn't. An inkjet should be able to make a damaged print, without a noise that follows the damage pattern. If there is a change in noise, it implies a mechanical issue. And I don't buy that. I don't think the transport is stopping for one row or something. If that happened, a row would be darker, not lighter. Paul |

Paul Here is a color test sheet. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0xhjghtcs9...Sheet.png?dl=0 Andy Here is a page for comparison. Might be from the designer of the page. Printed and scanned. https://design.canonical.com/2012/03...-2012-a5-scan/ Your printer almost looks like it uses K on everything. The Canonical print page sample, looks like an attempt at pure colors in CYMK space. So the top set of saturated half-moons, shouldn't have used the K print head at all (for the C,M,Y half-moons). And the lighter half-moons, should be printed with a half tone pattern. I would say it's something to do with the black print head only. And that somewhere, maybe a gamma setting or some other transform, is making for your "darkened" colors. Your page also looks like there is some jitter involved. Either the scan process or the print process. Now, the scan process only relies on vertical transport. The scan element is N pixels wide and should scan the width of the sheet. So the jitter isn't coming from scanning. Printing on the other hand, is bidirectional, with the head sweeping side to side as the transport steps vertically between sweeps, and maybe the belt is getting a bit loose or there's a bit of gear slack in the side to side sweep. For the pattern you're getting, that print head must be *huge* :-) But I haven't taken the carts out of mine for a while, to remind me. Naturally, the taller the active surface, the fewer sweeping passes needed, so there's an incentive to make it tall. But that also increased the number of piezo or thermal pumps. And those need electrical drivers all working at the same time. Paul |

I use Scangear and wish there was a way to make it default to a resolution of 200 dpi. It's default is 300 dpi which makes some hugh size files. As in 18 Mb for one page. I have to manually set it to 200 dpi for every scan. Andy |

Andy On some ink jets, the print head is a separate purchase item, from how the ink is provided. Note that manual cleaning usually spells doom for a printhead. If you push ink backwards into the jets, by using alcohol, it may dry and clog and get harder to remove on the next attempt. The "positive" pressure provided by the inkjet printer cleaning method, so it (tries) to pump ink out through the holes, is the only really safe method. When you do cleaning from the outside, you really don't have sufficient control of what is going on, to be successful each and every time. Like, just wiping the alcohol off the head with a Kleenex could be enough to stuff lint into multiple holes. (This info is provided, by me ruining the print heads on some devices at work :-/ Live and learn.) ******* I don't use Scangear, but apparently it has a dialog box for defining the resolution of an "Image Type". So the default comes from the "kind" of scan you're doing, and there is some sort of "Global" setting as seen on page 34. I have no idea where that dialog came from, what sub-menu, but at least it implies the ability to change a default. As they say "Good luck with that" :-) Even if this manual isn't for your machine, it's a conceptual start on fixing it. http://files.canon-europe.com/files/...r_Guide_EN.pdf Paul |

I have cleaned heads using CUPS. I also just physically cleaned the printer heads. There was a lot of ink and some was pooled on the bottom of printer. I refill my cartridges. I will keep looking for some kind of configuration file. If I can find the software author, I will send him a message. But thanks for your very informative answers. :-( Andy I just found a program called Xsane. It lets you configure dpi resolution. They have Windows versions as well. Andy |
