CD/DVD letter not shown in XP

I have just installed and uninstalled and reinstalled again an LG CD/DVD
drive. The system shows the device working, yet I cannot see it when I use
windows explorer. I can only see all the other drives on an other tower
connected to the network and the server and its drives. On the local system
it only identifies the C:\ Nothing can play on the drive since it is not
recognized. The C:\ is jumpered to master and the CD/DVD is jumpered to
slave on the primary IDE connector. I've even tried using it as a master on
the secondary IDE connector but with identical results.

Have you ever installed Power Toys?
If so there is a setting to not show drives that arn't on the system. If
you uncheck the corresponding drive letters it will allow you to see the
drive.
I did this myself a whiile back and not realizing it installed a new drive
that I could not see. Unchecked the box and it was visible.
Just a possible solution.

I would suggest using the new 80 wire cable that came with the LG drive and
connecting the LG as master on second IDE channel. P.S. double check your
jumper settings - single master. Also, check your BIOS to make sure the
second IDE channel is enabled.

The drive is connected through the secondary IDE connector and the jumper is
set for master. I've downloaded the new firmware from LG and still not
functioning. LG tells me to return the device back to Future Shop and Future
Shop tells me to bring the machine(s) to them for installation $45 each plus
$25 express service. Damn thing is driving me nuts. I guess I'll be without
the machines for a few hours. I will let the list know what the problem
solution was so as to defuse anyone's else's agrivation.

For a reason only known to XP the drive was being identified as a D: drive
(not illogical in itself), but apparently it was conflicting with the
\\server\d\. I have no idea it did not default to Local D as there is a
Local C. The drive therefore was identified as drive I on both machines and
they are now recognized by Explorer and My Network places. I had to make
those changes. One cannot relabel the drive letters in Windows 98.
Everything is now working. Thanks to all for your comments.
