Default O.T. Malwarebytes:

I have a Dell XPS 8500, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1,
with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender
and Windows firewall.

(1) TB HD
Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-33-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
Ram 12.0 GB
System type : 64-bit operating system

I also have

I have a Dell Optiplex 780 Tower, with Windows 7 Professional,
SP1, with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender
and Windows firewall.

Intel (R) Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz
4GB RAM, 750 GB HD
System type : 64-bit operating system

and (external hard drives)

(8500)
WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200
RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal
Hard Drive

(780)
Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB
Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
Internal Hard Drive

The problem I'm having is that every time I
click on the Malwarebytes icon to open up it
gives me this:

http://i64.tinypic.com/2ir2o11.jpg

I can do scan OK, but I shouldn't be getting this.

Should I just download a clean copy? I don't seem
to have it in my download folder so I would appreciate
a link if possible.

Thoughts/Suggestions?
Thanks,
Robert

Since both your systems run Windows 7, wouldn't you get better
responses in a Windows 7 newsgroup? It's entirely possible for an
XP-oriented answer to be completely inappropriate for your systems.

He is coming in via Google Groups.

There is no alt.windows7.general in Google Groups.
Google Groups is also missing Win8 and Win10 groups,
plus there are missing Linux ones as well.

The microsoft.public.windowsxp.general group
is available on USENET *and* Google Groups.

That's why he is here.

Sorry, can't help with your problem, but could you use Alt-PrtScrn
rather than just Prt-Scrn next time? (The tinypic site wants to run lots
of scripts and flash before it lets me see the text.)

"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive
\Device\Harddisk3\DR3"

A look through Google, shows that problem has
been around for at least *six* years.

You'd think they'd eventually figure it out.

They're trying to scan either:

1) A disk that isn't "ready" when it should be.
This is highly unlikely to be the root cause.
Even a hard drive that spins down, would spin up in
time to be probed.

2) It's a removable media drive. You have a card reader
which presents four (unmounted) volumes. Malwarebytes
could be attempting to probe the card reader.

To prevent (2), you'd find a recipe that "removes
drive letters for card reader when not in usage".
This shows a tick box for Windows 7.

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...er-folder.html

The folder options dialog can be found in File Explorer,
using pictures nearer the end of this page.

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ions-open.html

Setting such an option, will cause the four card reader drive
letters to go away (when not being used), but will also cause
the optical drive letter to go away. Just in case you were wondering
where the optical drive letter went. When media is in the drive,
the letter should come back.

You also have the option of opening Disk Management, and
before making *any* changes, try to determine what
device is "\Device\Harddisk3". I think it's your card
reader, but it would be nice to verify that.

I should of clarified in my original post that
this is happening only on the Dell 8500.

I checked and I already have my drives hidden
and the don't show hidden folders option is
checked.

I couldn't find anything in Disk Management

Um, I know this is going to sound stupid but
what exactly is 'my' card reader on the 8500?
You say I have one that represents (4) volumes?
I don't know what that means.

The only thing 'different' is that I had a free
trial version of their premium service which ran out
recently.

Thanks,
Robert

When you look in Disk Management on the affected
machine, do you see this ?

+-------+- - - - -------+
| Disk0 | |
+-------+- - - - -------+
+-------+- - - - -------+
| Disk1 | |
+-------+- - - - -------+
+-------+- - - - -------+
| Disk2 | |
+-------+- - - - -------+
+-------+- - - - -------+
| Disk3 | | === error message references this one
+-------+- - - - -------+

Do you see anything that resembles a disk 3 in
Disk Management ? On a machine with a card
reader, there may be "rows" in the table, but
with no partition definitions (when media is not
present).

The error message should at least correspond to
a row in Disk Management.

I see

Disk 0 - An ordinary rotating hard drive, 1TB size

Disk1,2,3,4 - A card reader with no media plugged in
- Letters assigned G: F: D: H:

Optical E:

The thing is, Malwarebytes scans C: on Disk 0 first.

Then, it goes looking for letter D: .

It finds letter D: (nominally) on Disk3.

Disk3 has no media.

Then, the Malwarebytes error message appears on your screen.

*******

The evidence is all there, assuming that picture
came from the affected computer.

Try asking in https://forums.malwarebytes.com. also, why are you posting in Windows XP newsgroup?
