In fact, MS' strong armed tactics just may motivate people who would otherwise be honest to pirate. Alias |

Yep, the vast majority of those left in New Orleans are predominately poor and black. Most of those that had the means to get out, got out before the storm. At least 80,000 people are estimated to have been left behind in New Orleans, and there are about 25,000 in and around the Super Dome. That leaves around 55,000 people still unaccounted for. And the longer these people are left to fend for themselves the more this tragedy will descend into total choas. -- Peace! Well it appears the authorities are more concerned with private property (not surprising) than saving lives. Why else would they divert the role of law enforcement from life saving/rescue to stopping looting? New Orleans is a disaster zone and they're worried about people stealing sneakers? -- Have you been MicroShafted today? To mess up a Linux box, you need to work *at* it. "Leythos" wrote in message ... In article , says... It is not my problem that you don't understand copyright law and haven't the slightest clue what you're talking about. I suggest you do some research and read 17 USC 107. I will helpfully provide you a link: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107 They key point: "Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright." Perhaps we can have a meaningful debate once you have the slightest clue what you're talking about. So, then we agree, making a COPY to loan a friend violates the law. It might or might not. It depends whether the copy you are loaning a friend meets the provisions of fair use or not. In the words of the US copyright office: "The distinction between 'fair use' and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined". No piece of software can make this distinction. DS |

"Leythos" wrote in message ... So, again, it does not appear to impact the people that are not violating the law, Just to be 100% clear, is it your position that DRM technologies such as those in Vista will not allow content authors to restrict fair use in ways they currently cannot? Because it is my position that people who are not violating the law *will* be impacted because legal rights they currently have under fair use will be restricted by technical means. DS |

Why worry MarcusD? As long as you're strong and you're not a trouble maker in this world, who's going to come for you? - Winux P "MarcusD" wrote in message ... MS is not the only one that's going to have a problem with China. Due to the fact that we have now taught the Chinese how to build everything for us, and we have a huge trade imbalance to show for that, not to mention their already huge and very rapidly growing military strength, and their coziness with Russia of late, my thoughts are that we should all be more concerned about our own tails, and not worry so much about microsoft's behind. I'm Sticking with xp & windows 98se forever. If I have to get a new computer it will be either mac or linux system. So, what you're saying, is that you want the option to be able to steal media if you choose and it's not the right of the OS vendor to limit you in any way? That's not what he's saying. What he's saying is that he trusts himself more than he trusts his OS vendor. It's a question of who should have the keys to his computer, him or Microsoft. He chooses himself. I would too. DS Pitiful arguments for and against. If you are against copying - then just don't do it! If you are for copying - then think outside the box and buy a scan converter and split your audio out - sending that to a standalone VCR/DVD recorder unit for about $129.00 (US) and shut up. The folks who own the copyrights think folks are not smart enough to realize that you can record things withou a computer - and most of these replies talking about invasion of privacy - lack or respect - etc. just need to learn that nothing can be protected from copying if you think outside the box. cya! |

My younger brother when he worked for Shell Oil, lived at the end of Bourbon St his first year but didn't get any sleeep as somebody tried to break into his car every single night setting off the alarm. So he moved across the lake where the rest of the Shell Oil folks lived. |
