You could always buy a Mac.... When some a-hole web publisher tries to
install BONZI Buddy or any other app that I didnt ask for, the .exe
file lands safely on my desktop & does not/cannot run.

This post isnt meant to slam PC users, it's just that there arent many
apyware/adware/malware "coders" out there making this stuff for Mac
users... because we arent the majority! Or another option would be
to run Lindows, or Red Hat (Linux)...

As computer/internet users, should we really need to install 4
different adware removal tools & waste our time waiting for them to
complete their scans? Only to have Spybot pick-up 10 things that
Adaware missed?

You should not have to be a mainframe computer operator to use your
home PC... Most people havent a clue.. i guess that is good news for
the freelance/side job PC repair guy...

You would be amazed to see the amount of viruses designed for Linux
compared to Windows. Most logging/trojan/backdoor viruses are designed
for Linux simply because the majority of servers with desired
information run Linux. No OS is secure and your Mac doesn't rank very
high up there. Good luck explaining this:
http://www.techworld.com/security/ne...fm?newsid=1798

The truth is, security is largely dependent on the user. If you don't
know what you are doing, you are going to be at a higher risk. There
are people new to both PC's and Macs. Don't think for a moment that you
are safe just because you run a Mac.

Fallacies, they are all fallacies.

I came to this site cause I was having the same error as horace50
I was hoping to find a solution ...but instead I found alot of people
beating up on poor old horace50 ...totally missing the points he was
trying to make ... and totally missing his problem
Point 1 ...the majority of viruses and spyware are made for windows
operating systems ...if you run mac or linux ...you are less likly to
get them ...one person picked up on this ...and said they make alot for
linux ...sub point 1...linux is free!!!!! ...windows xp home 87 to 137
dollars professional 187
sub point 2 ... viruses spread from one operating system to another
...there's alot less people running mac and linux so alot less chances
to spread it ...he said all the servers run linux ...but the servers
are run hopefully by IT proffesionals with virus protection ...not your
aunt betty sending you an e-mail that hasn't got a clue ...
Point 2 ...If you guys are intellegent as you were trying to sound why
you were trying to convice poor horace how un-intelligent he was...you
would of looked down the list of running programs ...and found that he
was and is running a virus program at start up ...all asus boards ship
with pc-cillin a virus program ...a good one arguably better than the
one's you suggested because it runs smother and takes less system
resources to run ...pop3trap.exe ...scans all internet traffic in
realtime ...pccclient.exe and pccguide.exe ...is the virus program and
automatic update utillity ...so he was up to date ...if he clicked ok
when promted to update ...
You guys were right in suggesting ad-aware from lava-soft but also run
spyware blaster from javacool ...It stops the spyware from ever getting
on to your computer

But I don't think his problem lies in spyware or viruses...
I'm having the same problem as he is and I'm completly free of viruses
and spyware ...I got here by doing a search on the error code ...I know
his post is old but maybe someone will read this ...and give advice or a
solution or maybe it will help horace50 ...
My computer keeps crashing when I play games ...internet explorer (but
ever since 6 it seems to do that alot anyway)
and other apps ...but mostly on games (counter strike zero single
player not online and microsoft combat flight simulator 3) ...
All the crashes point to memory errors ...caused by drivers or
motherboard bios...or maybe even a weak or cheap power supply ...
I have little to no problem when running xp home (crashed 3 times last
year with 3 kids constantly on it) ...it's when I run the 137 to 187
dollars more than linux ...xp professional that I have the problems
...
I run a asus motherboard like horace50 ...a A7N8X-E Deluxe to be exact

3200xp 400mhz side bus
1 gig DDR400 3200 samsung memory
ati 9600XT video card
36gig WD 10000rpm sata hard drive
120 WD IDE 7200 RPM Hard drive
250 WD IDE 7200 RPM Hard drive a
cheap I-cute case with power supply(420 watt I think)
d-link extreme G wireless card
4 case fans
sony floppy
plextor 48x cd-burner (horace might have one 2 because of the roxio
programs he has)
I've updated all the driver's for the video card and motherboard
hopefully correctly and all of them
I tried to update the bios and have'nt had much luck
I have bios version 1006 they make for this board all the way to
version 1013 ...
which states ...fixes samsung DDR400 memory to enter winxp problem
I was told never to update your bios unless you really have to by
freinds years ago ...and have always bought the latest motherboad so I
had no need to ...but hoping with new tecnology it would be easier now
...so I went to the asus site ...and they had the same warnings
...which made me feel very confident ...so I decided to try it ...
there's 3 ways to update the bios
first I tried using the asus bios update utility which said there was
no update avalible on the 2 english sites but the german site said
there was ...but it was in german ...
then I downloaded the bios from the asus site made a ms-dos start up
floppy and tried to copy the bios file to it but it kept coming up 0 kb
when it was a 512kb file
the other way is to make a floppy in dos mode wich I haven't tried yet
(hey I thought xp got rid of dos ...funny that's the only way I could
get my wireless to work was with dos commands before microsoft came out
with updates !!!)
so I tried to call asus to ask them if it was safe to update the bios
from version 1006 to 1013 ...you call support and then press 4 for a
line that's for nothing but bios questions I thought cool I'm going to
speak to a tech this is nice ...
but then after a short wait ...I got a guy who's answers didn't seem
right and I was asking him basic questions about bios and it seemed I
knew more then him and I know very little...then he said can I have
your name and phone number so I can have a tech call you back ...then I
relized I got a secretary and he really shouldn't be answering those
questions wich I found the next day that most of what he said was
terribly wrong ...but it was late so I had to decline ...and that's as
far as I have gotten ...till I got here
On a side note ...microsofts support and there website is exeptional
for there products ...just don't ever try to call them on the phone or
you'll get the same I got from asus and worse ...
I wish I could go to the ati site or any other hardware site and
automaticly scan and update the drivers like you can for microsoft (the
only problem there drivers always make every computer I've tried crash
so I go to the manufactures site) but the support for there software is
good ...
you go to ati for a driver they don't list your card just radeon family
and a few others so you guess 9600XT sounds like radeon family fire gl
does'nt sound right so why not ...
It amazes me how much these people who supposedly are
the kings of computers ...how much there websites suck in so many ways
...
that's why I have to commend microsofts website and support on there
website ...the answers usually there if you have the time to look
...just don't ever try to call them unless you really have to ...and
then still don't call ...

I'm a private person, retired - this response is my personal view.

1/ If you require help from experts, use NON-inflammatory and RELEVANT
subject headers.

2/ Long ago, in UK we had a wonderful comedian (Kenneth Williams, R.I.P.)
who created a charcter called Rambling Sid Rumpole - speciality being
long-winded but extremely funny anecdotes, on radio. You appear to have
inherited the rambling, but, alas, missed out on the humour.

3/ If my understanding is correct, you've been loading incorrect drivers and
BIOS updates on the ill-founded belief that that will improve things (Lord
alone knows what else you've done to your system). One element I empathise
with - Asus m/b support is poor.
That said, my recommendation is - (hope and pray the BIOS you currently have
is viable).
Reformat your hard disk, reload XP and SP2, AntiVirus and all the ORIGINAL
drivers for your kit. THEN configure Windows update to "AUTOMATIC" - and
after you've got a clean working OS, start on software. (and one thing - AVG
Antivirus - FREE - is excellent, AND auto-updates).

If you run into problems, post questions - one by one, with RELEVANT
headers, and short relevant text.

To be clear - this is a technical resource. The guys that give the answers
are in the main professionals. They deal in facts, not opinions - it's not a
debating society! Following the above advice will get you much much better
service.

OK, so I ramble on a bit - but, every point I've made is constructive and
positively helpful. Hope you agree.

Get bigger power supply. Your setup needs more juice.
