Since I installed xp on to my system I have been inundated with worms, viruses and the computer just not working the way it should. This is just a bit of what is going on. Microsoft will not help unless you pay them more money? I think that is wrong? when

Easy. Buy and install a good virus scanner, and keep it up-to-date at all
times. It's the same as with your body: It may be perfectly healthy to start
with but if you expose it to lots of germs and viruses then it will fail in
no time at all.

Note that your existing installation may be damaged beyond repair, hence a
brand new installation may be required.

Let's see, you're blaming MS for the fact *YOU* can't be bothered to take
proper security measures?! You'd probably blame the manufacturer if you
didn't set the alarm, and lock *YOUR* car , and someone swiped the radio!

It is *YOUR* responsibility to ensure that *YOUR* computer is adequately
secured. MS cannot be held accountable for *YOUR* actions, or lack thereof.

Let me guess, you have an OEM licence. May I suggest you read the EULA?! It
absolves MS of all responsibility regarding support. You will need to
contact whomever sold you the software. The cost of an OEM licence is half
that of the full retail.

And if it is retail, of course MS will charge when the problems are nothing
to do with XP.

I bet you did no homework before installation, you didn't bother to run the
Upgrade Advisor (available for download from the MS site - it wouldn't be on
the OEM CD as they cannot be used to upgrade), nor did you bother to check
whether your hardware was on the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).

This is an obvious chair/keyboard interface problem - i.e. you have no-one
to blame but yourself!

Install a decent firewall and AVP and quit whinging!

XP is a pretty good OS if run on hardware that is up to the
job. Describe your system and did you run the upgrade test
to see what hardware and software problems you would face?

XP does need a firewall turned ON (all computers do) and it
must be configured properly on properly working hardware
with software that is fairly stable. XP has advantages in
that the OS will not crash if a program crashes and this is
an advantage XP has over previous Windows.

You bought an OEM XP disk and OEM is not supported by
Microsoft and this is a well known fact, if you wanted tech
support from MS you have to buy retail. When you buy OEM
YOU are your own tech support because YOU are the mfg'r.

The OP will need to re-install his system (the only help that Cerridwen
missed out) and also install anti-virus and firewall software (the help that
Cerridwen included).. Now he has a solution.. however, the 'ticking off' was
necessary too.. XP is a far better OS than anything before it.. thousands of
people run XP without problems.. they research a little, ask questions here
and at stores.. sensible people check out OS's that are new to them before
assuming that they know better

When XP was first introduced, there was a general lack of preipheral device
drivers.. MS was blamed by many for this, but the simple truth is that the
device manufacturers underestimated just how many would switch to XP and how
quickly it would be embraced.. peripheral device drivers are the
responsibilty of the device manufacturers.. MS included drivers in the XP
software that were given to them.

Anybody who has done any surfing whatsoever will recognize that ant-virus
programs are a must if connected to the net.. MS saw fit to include a basic
firewall in XP and would include AV software if the rest of the world would
let them, no doubt.. people who come into newsgroups like this one
proclaiming XP to be useless are invariably those who have done no
preparation at all.. the OP was/is one of those people who blames everybody
but himself for the shortfall in his own knowledge..

Let me see...You connect to the internet without a firewall, antivirus
program, ad and spam blockers, and you expect the OS to take care of these
for you? Are you even able to feed and dress yourself? You are pathetic.

Like the previous person said, he needs help, not to be bashed. First
of all I would download AVG from grisoft.com. It is a free and very
good virus program. Secondly I would try to run HijackThis!. It is a
program that will scan your PC and list any BHO (Browser Helper?
Objects) that are installed. A lot of times websites and programs will
add search and homepage changes to Internet explorer. Also use
Ad-Aware from Lavasoft.de . This program will search for all the
spyware that is probably on your machine. Kazaa and other programs and
websites regularly install these ad and pop up programs that seem to
screw up a PC good. I would try a re-install and choose repair of
internet explorer(Start/Control Panel/Add remove Programs). Please
email me if you need more help. Like has been said you really want to
have AntiVirs software and Spyware installed.

As others have said you need an antivirus program installed on your
computer. Running without one in today's computing environment is
comparable to jumping out of an airplane without a parachute or
playing Russian Roulette with all chambers loaded.

To clean up your machine start by downloading McAfee's Stinger (free)
from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger This is small enough to fit onto
a 3.5 inch diskette so you could download it on another computer and
then take it on a diskette to your machine.

Run Stinger to clean up the worst of the viruses infecting your
machine. It removes about 40 of the common ones that are currently
circulating.

Then go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do an online virus scan
(free) to clean up anything that Stinger missed.

Once the machine is clean then get yourself an antivirus program and
make sure that you keep it up to date. A very good free antivirus
program is AVG6 from http://www.grisoft.com If you install this then
make sure you change the update frequency in the AVG Control Center
from the default 14 days to something much more frequent, such as 1
day or least not more than 3 days. Also change the update time to
something that is more realistic in terms of your computer usage
pattern. If the computer is not turned on at the scheduled update
time then it will not check, even if the computer is turned on later.
So select a time when the computer is most likely going to be turned
on.

And if you do install AVG and especially if you are on a dial-up
Internet connection then you should also install the free AVG Update
Reminder utility from
http://members.tripod.com/cwaldman/A...VGUpdater.html and
configure it to remind you if your AVG is more than 3 days out of
date.

You also need to clean your computer of Advertising spyware.
Download, install, update, and run AdAware (free) from
http://www.grisoft.com

And if your Internet connection is not going through a router that has
NAT protection included then you need to install a firewall program or
at least activate the built-in firewall in Windows XP. To activate
the firewall open Control Panel - Network Connections, right-click on
the icon for your Internet connection and select Properties. In the
properties window click on the Advanced tab and then click on the
checkbox for "Protect my computer...." to select it. Click on Apply
and OK as needed to exit.

Hope this helps resolve at least some of your problems.

Good luck
