Default How to post text from Windows message without typing it

Hello.

Does anybody know how to get the text from a windows message into a forum
message without typing it verbatim from the message itself ?

I ask a lot of questions on these forums and it has been very helpful and i
would like to continue to do so. But when you have to post an error message
you get from windows, the only way i know to do it is to type the message.

I tried pasting the message to the forum in HTML format, but some people
don't use HTML and therefore do not see what i am posting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

Many Windows error messages can be matched up to an entry in
Event Viewer.
Go to Start - Run and enter eventvwr.msc in the Open Box.
Click OK.
Click on Application in the left hand column. Note: Follow this
procedure in the System section if needed.
Look for an Error event that corresponds to the message you
received.
Double click on the entry.
In Event Properties, look for the button with two pages
displayed. It should be on the right below the up and down
arrows.
Click on this button. This will copy the text within the
Description box to the Clipboard.
You can now paste this text into your message.

Keep in mind that you can filter events listed by right
clicking on Application and/or System in the left hand column
and selecting Properties from the menu. Click on the Filter
tab. Remove the check mark from the Information box. Click OK.

Not all error messages are documented in Event Viewer but
hopefully the ones you encounter will be present.

Good luck

Hello Nepatsfan.

I looked at my event viewer. There hasn't been an entry in the application
or system events since 4/1/2005. I have had numerous windows errors since
then.

I don't think using the event viewer is very helpful for this.

Thanks,
Tony

In what form are the error messages from Windows?

Most people do not post in HTML as it's a security window, so maybe you want
to change that, and don't worry about the fact that your post is not being
seen by everyone.

Windows message boxes (not dialog boxes or dialog boxes that look like message boxes) will copy the title bar, text, and buttons as text. EG

No entries since April 1st? And you don't think that's a
problem? Have you considered that this might be the source of
some of your error messages? There are a number of Windows
components that need the Event Log service running.

You might want to make sure the Event Log service has not been
disabled. Go to Start - Run and enter services.msc in the Open
box. Look at the entry titled Event Log. It should list
Automatic as the Startup type. If it's set to disabled, double
click the entry and make the appropriate changes on the General
tab. If that's not the problem, you might want to go back to
Event Viewer. Right click on Applications. Select Properties
from the menu. Hit the "Restore Defaults" button on both the
General and Filter pages. Do the same for Security and System.
Reboot your system and see if entries have been recorded in
Event Viewer.

My apologies to everyone that replied to my problem.

I just realized that when a windows message pops up, you can simply do a
ctrl-c and use something like Notepad to ctrl-v. It pastes the error in
text format.

Sorry folks. I never knew you could do that.

All this time, whenever i wanted to save a message window, i would alt-print
screen, open paint and ctrl-v, then save the paint file.

Thanks,
Tony

I guess attachments are not allowed in forums ?

What's your point anyway ?

It's the only complete guide to using a keyboard. You would have known about Ctrl + C/V for messages boxes.
