Usenet Index Post
I am sorta new to NewsGroups. I am now seeing Usenet Index Posts, on
many boards that I follow. Can someone explain to me, what those posts are, and how they might be used?? |

I've been using newsgroups since 1985, and I've no idea what these might be. That's because you're not using Google Groups, but a proper newsreader looking at a news server. The Google interface is strange, constantly changing and, basically, broken, although Google groups does have very good retention once you find out how to work round the way they've changed the interface to it *this* week. To the OP, I'm sorry I can't help as I don't intend loading Google Groups to find out what the posts that you refer to are. -- Tciao for Now! John. |

Using your Forte Agent newsreader, you could look at the "header" section of this mysterious posting, and copy it into the next message you post. In particular, the Message ID or "MID" field, is the one we can use here, to play along and read the same message you see. For example, the original message you sent, has this as a MID value. Now, when I use the http://al.howardknight.net/ site and you give me a MID, I can look up the message easily. This is an archived copy of your original posting. http://al.howardknight.net/msgid.cgi...8%404ax.com%3E (The howardknight site truncates long postings, so cannot be used for movie retrieval or downloading.) The MID is key to easily identifying messages for discussion. Google Groups allows searching by MID, but the function has been broken for several years. It takes a long time (if ever), before new postings are indexed and show up in a search. That's why the howardknight site, is the site I use for looking up a message using a MID value. ******* Post the MID of a sample of this kind of message, so we can see it too. Paul |

Your posting is sort of off-topic here. Questions about newsreaders can be asked in news:news.software.readers and if you have specific questions about Forté Agent, you can ask them in news:alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent That being said: what boards are you talking about, because I have no clue what you mean by "Index Posts". Are you talking about NZB files? -- s|b |

Most likely it is an indexing system that board uses. You should probably ask each board what the index is for. Newsgroups from a server read in a usenet client, are not, to my knowledge, indexed. Now this could also be referring to the message "count" system a service might use to keep track of posts on their servers. 40tude dialog uses the term "marker" to indicate where the group messages start and end. |

You'll learn because it takes decades of dedication to make it to the top
of the food chain on usenet. Here's a tidbit on how to make it to the upper echelon. Subject: HOMELESS LISA IS "Between ISPs" Date: Thu, 31 Oct 2013 08:53:54 -0700 From: "THE COLONEL" Organization: A noiseless patient Spider Newsgroups: alt.messianic, alt.support.chronic-pain, alt.usenet.kooks References: 1 "Homeless Lisa" was dumpster-dreamin' when she wrote in message ... Our internet connection went down this afternoon. I called the new ISP that we just signed up with and got a message that due to the large number of subscribers enrolling from the previous company it could be several days before the new accounts are active. We have a temporary solution, though we can't use much bandwidth, but no outgoing email service because we have no SMTP host. At least I have Usenet and can download mail. Homeless Lisa suffers from Rx meds she found in the trashcans. She has no ISP. Her "internet" consists of two tin cans and a string. LOL Dave C wrote: I am sorta new to NewsGroups. Ideally, you should post your question in the group(s) where you're seeing those posts, such as alt.binaries.multimedia or alt.binaries.teevee. I believe the answer you'll receive is to ignore them. -- Char Jackson |

This idiot thinks he's cute by setting a follow up to alt.clueless. The Kman was a fraud. He was just another alas of "Just Taylor - taylor jiminez et al". Or was there two of them? Do I care now? Not one damn bit. Because I had the last laugh and got his sorry ass kicked to kingdome come. As for pangborn, well, he was just a total idiot. |
