Default Is this possible to do in Windows?

This is what I want to do. First of all, I'm running Windows 7 Professional.

On my desktop I have a folder with my name.

When I open that folder, I have a number of other folders. Some of the names of
the folders are Graphics, Games, Logitech, Maintenance, Science, Utilities, and
so on.

When I open up any one of those folders, there are shortcuts to programs which I
have installed which fit into those categories.

What I want to know is, is it possible in some way to print the contents of one
of the folders, say Games, to get a printout of all the shortcuts in that
folder?

The reason I want to do so is when I get a new machine, I want to be able to go
through the lists and see what I want to install on the new system that I had on
the old. I just want a printed record of all the programs I have installed.

Thanks for any insight.

Presumably - you don't say - there's some reason why you can't simply
look at your old computer when setting up your new one. My instinct
wouldn't be to print anything. I'd copy the folder from my desktop, and
possibly a screen shot showing the layout(s), to a memory stick, and put
that into my new computer. The shortcuts might actually work, which
could save time re-creating them. If my old computer was no longer
available, I'd also include on the memory stick a screen shot of
"Control Panel: Programs and Features" for completeness.

I tried it with my Windows XP desktop.

Went there with the command prompt, and typed:

dir *.lnk h:\lnk.txt

Got this:

If you navigate to that folder on your desktop with explorer you can
simply hold the shift key and right click, you'll get a menu with 'open
command prompt here'. This way you don't have to CD to anything. Then simply type:

dir *.lnk /s

Dir *.ink FolderName.txt
for each folder which could be in DropBox for import into new PC

If you paste the following into Notepad and save as
List.vbs (or other file name with .vbs extension) you
can drop a folder onto the VBS file to generate a
formatted list as a text file, ready for printing. (If
security prevents you dropping a folder you can also
double-click the script and enter a path.)
The list will include the names of all .lnk files,
listed under the name of the respective parent folder.

You could also use this script with the Start
Menu\Programs folder. There's one catch there, though.
Some programs install to AppData\[username]\Start Menu
and some install to All Users\Start Menu. I generally move
everything to All Users for consistency and also weed out
all the junk, like links to websites, that so many programs
now put on the Start Menu. If you don't do that then you'll
need to process both folders and then clean up your list.

* Watch out for wordwrap. Line returns are meaningful in
VBScript and the news posting may chop off longer lines.

'--- begin script

Dim FSO, s2, TS, Arg

Arg = WScript.Arguments(0)
If Len(Arg) = 0 Then Arg = InputBox("Enter path of folder.", "")
If Len(Arg) 3 Then WScript.quit

Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
On Error Resume Next
GetFolderList Arg
Set TS = FSO.CreateTextFile("C:\Program List.txt", True)
TS.Write s2
TS.Close
Set TS = Nothing
Set FSO = Nothing

MsgBox "List saved to C:\Program List.txt", 64

Sub GetFolderList(sPath)
Dim oFol, oFols, oFils, oFil, oFol1, sName
On Error Resume Next

Set oFol = FSO.GetFolder(sPath)
s2 = s2 & oFol.Name & vbCrLf
Set oFils = oFol.Files
For Each oFil in oFils
sName = oFil.name
If UCase(Right(sName, 3)) = "LNK" Then
sName = Left(sName, (len(sName) - 4))
s2 = s2 & Chr(9) & sName & vbCrLf
End If
Next
Set oFils = Nothing
Set oFols = oFol.SubFolders
If oFols.count 0 Then
For Each oFol1 in oFols
GetFolderList(oFol1.Path)
Next
End If
Set oFols = Nothing
Set oFol = Nothing
End Sub

'-- end script

If you do DIR /b /s *.lnk list.txt
you get just the names of the shortcuts in all the subdirectories
without the extraneous cruft.

e.g.

C:\Desktop\Applications\App1.lnk
C:\Desktop\Applications\App2.lnk
C:\Desktop\Applications\App3.lnk
C:\Desktop\Games\Game1.lnk
C:\Desktop\Games\Game2.lnk
C:\Desktop\Games\Game3.lnk
C:\Desktop\Utilities\Util1.lnk
C:\Desktop\Utilities\Util2.lnk
C:\Desktop\Utilities\Util3.lnk

I just had to reinstall Win7 home premium. I copied everything from
my C Drive to a external hard drive. After re-installing Windows, I
copied Users/XXX/desktop from the external drive to the new install.
Most programs had to be reinstalled, for the ones I didn't want to
keep I just deleted the icon. I used Nico's Commander for the
copying, set to show hidden files & folders.

I'd copy the whole shebang to a thumb drive. You'll lose the icons, that's
all.

You've already gotten several good answers, but let me add my standard
answer, which gives you five choices:

Here are five ways:

1. Select all the files, press and hold the shift key, then
right-click and select Copy as path.

This copies the list of file names to the clipboard.

Paste the results into any document such as a txt or doc file & print
that.

2. Go to a command prompt and issue the command
dir [drive:folder] c:\tempfilename (you can use any name and put it
in any folder you want)
Then open notepad, open tempfilename, and print it from there.

3. Write (for example in Notepad) a 1-line text file:
DIR %1 /O LPT1:
Save it as "printdir.bat" in the "Send To" folder.
Then, to print list of files in any folder, right-click that folder
and select Send to | printdir.bat
To include subfolders, change the command to DIR %1 /O/S LPT1:

4. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q321379 and
follow the instructions there.

5. Download and use any of the several freeware/shareware utilities
that can do this, such as the popular
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptdirprn.asp

I can't really stop appreciating the fact that in 30-more years Windows
hasn't yet given the user a simple command like "print directory list"

well, we have smooth icons, sliding effects, amazing transparencies, tons
of "inutili orpelli" but not a GUI command to get a file list

personally I use Total Commander to make tens of thing that windows doesn't
do directly, i.e. have a list of whats-inside-a-folder

Seriously, how often does anyone really need to do that? Do other
popular OSs have such a thing? I don't see it as anything Microsoft
should have wasted their time on. You've always got the command line
method, which gives you more flexibility than a GUI method probably
would.
