I like many other people here seem to have some of the same problems with boot-legged xp. I believe that most of us are honest folks who got taken advantage of by bad business people. It seems to me that you guys all have a patent answer for our problems.
Buy a new copy!!! I have a new copy and I still have not been able to get an answer from anyone becasue it seems that you MVP's are quick to suggest that the only answer is to buy a new one or that we are somehow responsible for getting taken advantage of
. I hate Microsoft because of some of these very things. Even though I have shelled out the $280.00 for the retail verson of XP Pro, I am still going to lose my data because of the way they have made the install process. I understand wanting to protect th
eir investment but this is crazy I hope Bill Gates and his money mongers get taken to the bank with these law suits. And for you MVP's stop being such jerks and actually help someone instead of carring the banner for microsoft or are you guys on the payrol

""going to lose my data because of the way they have made
the install process.""

every time at my office when the tech guys install new
software/patches they advise: back up your data.

before you install the new software.....
take this advice: back up your data to some portable
device. diskette - cd-rom - usb-drive.

after install then reinstall your data. this will take
some time. but you should not lose any data.

and don't forget to get new drivers for your different
devices like printers scanners etc.

You were advised to perform a "repair install" using a "Full Version" of Windows XP.
Don't understand what your beef is. You should be upset with the person who sold you
a computer with a pirated version of Windows XP, and not with someone trying to help
you solve the problem. I won't comment on the other silly remarks you made.

Trent;
It is hard to know exactly what you are referring.
The fact is, if an illegal copy is installed, the only fix is to
replace it with a legal operating system.
If the person chooses to keep his data without having a big hassle,
the only option is to buy Windows XP Pro and perform a Repair
Installation.

You say "...still have not been able to get an answer from anyone..."
I see no record of this question.
The only question I do find from you Subject "this version of windows
xp cannot be upgraded" seems unrelated to this particular question.

It really does not matter how you came across a pirated version.
The point is if you have it, Microsoft or anyone else for that matter
(other than seller) has absolutely no obligation to help you or give
you any assistance what so ever.
However you do get useful information in spite of your current
attitude.

Here is my "patent answer" see if you can tell me what is wrong with
it?
You can't.
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/invalpk.htm

You say "hate Microsoft because of some of these very things", what
very things? Because you thought you bought a Microsoft product and
now find out it will cost you to remedy your mistake?
Are you implying Microsoft should say "you paid the money, so we will
give it to you even though we received nothing from the purchase"
What is crazy about anyone wanting you to pay for products or services
received?
It would appear you hate Microsoft because:
There are thieves in the world.
One of the thieves found you.
You can not fix the issue without losing data (except you can)
Microsoft was not a party in any way shape or form to the illegal
transaction so Microsoft has no obligation to help you make it right.
However Microsoft did just that. If you read my link and any of the
many posts a day about this very subject, you would know that you can
keep your data while making your computer legal.

If you still have these complaints about Microsoft, this link is most
likely just right for you:

My point is why do they have to make it so hard? You don't even get a decent manual with the product. For the amount of money that this software costs, you should get a little better support for your money. The net is a great place for info, but if your no
t sure of what your asking or how to phrase the question it is almost imposible to find answers. You call Microsoft and you have to give away your first born to get help. Just to get an e-mail answer costs you $99.00. The product is flawed and it will alwa
ys be flawed because of the sher nature of the system. Most of us know just enough about XP to be dangerous and we aren't as fortunate as You MVP's to have the training and skill to just fix our own systems. It is very frustrating. They know that there ar
e going to be problems, its the nature of the beast and they should offer sustained support for a longer period of time. Just ask the poor folks with OEM versions, they might as well have boot legged software because they get the same amount of support. Is
that right? You buy a system with the operating system installed you should get support from Microsoft! How many computers have you ever seen from a large manufacturer with no operating system installed? Very few. For those of you who like to spam, think
again. I can and will track you down!

Trent,
If you would have taken the time follow the link to my webpage and actually
looked at the information supplied, you would see more than just the option
to repair install, It also answers the question you asked about if you would
lose information. The information supplied is clearly presented and
complete. Go back and read the page and check the link for more options on
changing the CD Key. You may not even have to do the repair install.

Click on the link below, or copy and paste the link into the address box

Hmm... It's MS's fault because someone else sold you a pirated copy? And
now it's MS's fault because you won't use the suggested Repair Install to
correct the problem to get your data? And it's also MS's fault because you
didn't backup your data before you started? All these issues point to 1
person - you, as you could have verified the software as being legit or
pirated before you bought it (especially if it was an extremely cheap on
from e-bay or some other auction place). You are the one who consciously
decided not to backup your data, and you are the one who is deciding not to
use the remedy provided by others. So I just understand today's generation,
always making their mistakes someone's else's fault - grow up and take
responsibility for your actions, or lack of, whichever apply.

Star Fleet Admiral Q. I guess most of you only read what you want and not what is written. I am in no way blaming Microsoft for the pirated software. First off the software came on a system that I purchased from what I thought was a legitimate vendor. Not
a used system, but one that I had made. I'm not sure how one is supposed to ensure the software is legit, that is installed on one's system when it is bought. The only reason that I found out was by trying to download sp1. My beef is that I could not get a
ny answers from MS about how to install the retail full version that I purchased for $280.00 without losing my data. That is frustrating. When I posted a question here about how to do it the only answer from anyone was to buy new software and the virtues o
f having legitimate software. I had already bought the thing and before I started installing , I simply wanted to know how to do it without losing my data. Yes, I do have a back-up for my data, about 85 gigs worth. What kind of hassel is it to re-load all
of this stuff? Drivers, programs etc. My system is working perfectly I have no problems with it. I just wanted to have legitimate software and the flexability to have the most current versions. I guess I could not have purchased it and just kept what I h
ave. My point is again MS has you by the you know whats! Support is bad and it is expensive. I spent 53 min. on hold with MS to get an answer to my question. Why does it have to be so hard.

By the way Star Fleet I am of your generation and probably a little more advanced in life than some.

version that I purchased for $280.00 without losing my
data. That is frustrating. When I posted a question here
about how to do it the only answer from anyone was to buy
new software and the virtues of having legitimate
software. I had already bought the thing and before I
started installing , I simply wanted to know how to do it
without losing my data. Yes, I do have a back-up for my
data, about 85 gigs worth. What kind of hassel is it to
re-load all of this stuff? Drivers, programs etc. My
system is working perfectly I have no problems with it. I
just wanted to have legitimate software and the
flexability to have the most current versions. I guess I
could not have purchased it and just kept what I have. My
point is again MS has you by the you know whats! Support
is bad and it is expensive. I spent 53 min. on hold with
MS to get an answer to my question. Why does it have to be
so hard.

By the way Star Fleet I am of your generation and

probably a little more advanced in life than some.
