Star Fleet Admiral Q. I guess most of you only read what you want and
not what is written. I am in no way blaming Microsoft for the pirated
software. First off the software came on a system that I purchased
from what I thought was a legitimate vendor. Not a used system, but
one that I had made. I'm not sure how one is supposed to ensure the
software is legit, that is installed on one's system when it is
bought. The only reason that I found out was by trying to download
sp1. My beef is that I could not get any answers from MS about how to
install the retail full version that I purchased for $280.00 without
losing my data. That is frustrating. When I posted a question here
about how to do it the only answer from anyone was to buy new
software and the virtues of having legitimate software. I had already
bought the thing and before I started installing , I simply wanted to
know how to do it without losing my data. Yes, I do have a back-up
for my data, about 85 gigs worth. What kind of hassel is it to
re-load all of this stuff? Drivers, programs etc. My system is
working perfectly I have no problems with it. I just wanted to have
legitimate software and the flexability to have the most current
versions. I guess I could not have purchased it and just kept what I
have. My point is again MS has you by the you know whats! Support is
bad and it is expensive. I spent 53 min. on hold with MS to get an
answer to my question. Why does it have to be so hard.

By the way Star Fleet I am of your generation and probably a little
more advanced in life than some.

Unless you posted somewhere else or under a different name I don't see where
you got the replies you state above from your original post. I saw three
replies all trying to help you fix the problem. Two were posted within 15
minutes and both suggested a repair install. You next post was a rant
blasting every MVP and Microsoft.

Greetings --

And if you unknowingly bought a stolen car that was later
confiscated by the authorities to be returned to its lawful owner,
would the car's manufacturer be obligated to _give_ you a replacement?
Perhaps it's time you learned that the real world is not a warm and
fuzzy place, and that life isn't "fair."

And there's no need to lose your data. Back it up before
replacing your OS.

have a new copy and I still have not been able to get an answer from
anyone becasue it seems that you MVP's are quick to suggest that the
only answer is to buy a new one or that we are somehow responsible for
getting taken advantage of. I hate Microsoft because of some of these
very things. Even though I have shelled out the $280.00 for the retail
verson of XP Pro, I am still going to lose my data because of the way
they have made the install process. I understand wanting to protect
their investment but this is crazy I hope Bill Gates and his money

stop being such jerks and actually help someone instead of carring the
banner for microsoft or are you guys on the payroll to? If Linux was a

If you do a repair install, don't you need to have the cd with the
matching key of the original install?

Losing the data isn't the issue. He's already stated that he does
regular backups.

He'll lose all his settings...programs...drivers, etc.

You should know this.

There's a utility out there that can read your current key...and
another to change it to the one that you just purchased.

After that, you should be able to grab the service pack.

More than likely, the key you have was legal when you bought it. But
it got pirated...so MSFT blocked it for the sp1 download...and wrote a
utility for those who had to replace it.

Good luck.

Actually, I know from experience that he will _not_ lose all of
his programs, drivers and settings. Some, probably, but no where near
all; not if the repair is properly performed.

Trent;
Yes you can to what?
Change the Product Key?
That article only applies if BOTH original AND new Product Key are
Volume License.
If Trent OP buys another copy, it is almost certainly going to be
retail and your reference does not apply.

No, that is why a Repair Installation works so well for this
circumstance.

Trent;
You need to
Read the post from others.
Get your facts straight, that utility will only work if both original
and new are identical versions.
Also if the OP does not know, the installation is most likely a stolen
Volume License. and it was probably never legal on that computer.
Read back the last year, you will see this is fairly common and the
fix for being robbed is to buy another.
