I adore virtual machines.* My base system is Fedora Linux and I have

DOS, etc..* May host machine backs up the virtual hard drive and I
have wonderful restore capabilities.* If mess something up
on a VM, I wipe the virtual hard drive and restore from backup.
Problem solved.

The easy backup / restore definitely is one of the advantages of a VM.
Also, a VM could be used to get around software not running on new hardware.

I really, really don't get folks that dual boot their computers.
What a pain in the ass to go back and forth, not to mention a
house of cards.

I had a dual boot system once. It got where it wouldn't boot anything. I
suspect it was a victim of corporate paranoia (some software overwriting
the boot area of the disk with its "protection" (assume you're a thief)
junk).

This is silly to ask rogue traders here. Rogue trader want to make
money by any means even if they don't have the "intimate knowledge" as
you put it.

What's obsolete? Doesn't all software still support
Win7? Of course, you can't use Metro apps, but in
terms of actually using a computer, what does Win10
do that 7 doesn't?

Most software still supports XP, for that matter,
though that's been changing more recently. Firefox
dropped XP support in June. Adobe dropped it
at least a couple of years ago. And gamers, of
course, won't want to use XP. But obsolete means
too old to run what you need to use. XP isn't there
yet for most people. Win7 could conceivably outlast
Win10. (Edge is already obsolete, before it ever
really got off the ground, and due to be chromed.
And businesses have avoided Win10.)

If you use your computer mainly to play the latest
video games then Win7 might be obsolete for you.
I don't know. I don't use video games. But I can't
imagine what else might be a problem on Win7.

Maybe you're worried about support from MS?
Ironically, most versions of Win10 go out of support
before Win7 extended support ends:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...&gbv=1&ct=clnk

And Win7 support is likely to be extended further.
Since it's currently about even with Win10 in terms
of usage, and since much of that usage is in
business, Microsoft might have to support it longer,
and/or come up with some kind of compromise that
lets business bypass spyware and forced updates
in Win10 more thoroughly.

Microsoft will do whatever they can to encourage you to
move to win10. One subtle move is to change the software
development environment in such a way that it forces vendors
to maintain two separate versions of their product.
That costs vendors a lot of money in development and support costs.
Software will gradually move away from older operating system versions.
New hardware won't have drivers for legacy hardware. It's just a matter
of when.

Forced updates that seriously interrupt work flow have been
my biggest deal breaker. That seems to be manageable these days.
If you have a slow or limited data connection, that's still
a problem, but it's doesn't matter whether you're not updating
win7 or not updating win10.

The privacy ship has sailed. MS can get anything they want off any
version of the OS. And so can hackers. Smart phones have numbed us
to accept the open-door privacy model. You want the goodie?
All you gotta do is login and give us all your secrets.

The solution is simple. Imagine that billboard on the side of
the freeway displayed everything you ever did. Don't do anything
that you wouldn't want displayed there. And be glad that much of your
internet experience is paid for by those who are collecting information.
If only I could figger out how to get them to pay for the data connection
they use to send me all those ads.

I've either encrypted or moved all my secrets off my PC to my
VIC-20 with cassette tape storage. I can also use Virtualbox
to run a separate instance of a PC for sensitive stuff and remove
the .vdi file offline when done. Same goes for stuff like
Visual Basic 6. Runs fine in VBox win7.

I've considered whole disk encryption, but am not convinced that it will
help.
The secrets are already encrypted and when in use, they're not secure
anyway.

Bottom line is, "RESISTANCE IS FUTILE...ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US"

I shuttered win7 on this machine today...we'll see if I have to eat my
words.

You'll have to be more specific, why does it suck? It's just an improved version of 7. That's like saying you prefer the Golf Mk1 to the Mk4.

Same as what 7 does that XP doesn't. Bits and pieces. Minor change and upgrades. Why don't you go back and use Windows 2?

It's not private companies you have to worry about spying on you, they just want to thrust adverts down your throat. What you should be worried about is the government.

It's not Win 8 or Win 10.

Just like DOS, Internet explorer, Lotus, dBase, and other software that
has come and gone in the last 40 years

Internet Explorer "come and gone". I like that.

Just because it's now called Edge doesn't mean it's gone. Edge is still here and it still sux. Currently it tells me I have no internet connection, yet every other browser works. WTF? And as per usual with modern fluffy programs that act like a ****ing Apple Mac, all I get is a silly cartoon with a confused looking alien saying no internet. What about some ****ing technical information so I can fix the problem?!?

It is *not* now called Edge. Internet Explorer and Edge are two
different browsers, and *both* of them come with Windows 10.

I'm not a fan of Internet Explorer, but as far as I'm concerned, it's
much better than Edge, which to me is about the worst browser
available.

If there is an age difference between those that like Windows 10 and
those that like the old OS, It must be the younger ones who refuse to
upgrade.

I am 3/4 of a century old and am currently running W10 1809 on both of
my computers. I started out on a Texas Instrument TI-99-4a and the
Original IBM that had to 5.5 inch floppies for storage. We were
impressed when IBM released the AT with it graphics

So you get the old and the new version, so what, it doesn't change what I just said. They're both the same **** made my Microsoft. It's some legal bull**** because they weren't allowed to have edge as the default browser or something. I don't care.

They both suck. They're both full of security holes. They both stop working for no reason.
