There's an assortment of information here.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/w...oad-online-faq

Even if the information isn't all that accurate, at least it should
make a list for you to study.

Thanks, it seems my PC is OK for this. I want to
put Win 8.1 on a 250GB SSD and use this as an
alternate extra operating system on the same
computer.

You should have said this to begin with.
As long as the SSD is compatible then there should be no problems.

How can it not be compatible? Should I specify
something when I buy it? I want it to plug into
the Mboard via an eSata socket.

As to compatibility...

It's the other way around actually.

Win7 and Win8 would normally support any SSD

Though older versions of Windows will work with an SSD they do not
automatically "TRIM"

IIRC, Microsoft has a downloadable compatibility tester, if Paul's
answer is too manual for your needs.

And it is more than just the SSD you should worry about. But the SSD is
not a problem, according to philo (and I believe him).

All I want to do is to have another operating
system (Win 8.1) just for the Internet, isolated
from my original operating system (Win7), but
using all my existing hardware. I've done the
compatibility test and all is OK for this project.

You should have said this to begin with.

comes along?

Like I said last time you were basically asking about the same thing,
perfect use-case for a VM.

OK, you are those things.

Think of what you call "****ty" as good advice to the poster. People
often fail to get useful help because their description of the problem
is ... ****ty.

Nobody here is a mind reader. No, I take that back. There are a few
people here who have managed to figure out what someone meant in spite
of the poor or incomplete information given. But good information is
still useful...

Understood all along (after you had mentioned that detail). And when I
wrote the above I didn't know you had finally checked out the
compatibility.
