W7 Search Still Fails
Starting a new thread:
Ok, since I can't get Search to work in my W7 Ultimate. and I still want to use some W7 functions such as MSCONFIG and REMOVE PROGRAMS, etc - how do I do it? I used to simply enter what I want in the Search Box, hit enter, and voila, I could choose what I am seeking from the search results. Now W7 just sits there looking at me. I have tried rebuilding the index in indexing options, but that just hangs and does nothing. If I want to go to System Configuration Utility, is my only choice to find and execute MSCONFIG.EXE directly? Then how do I uninstall a program? I'll betcha if I reinstall W7 fresh, the search will work again, huh? That would be some work. Aw geez. Big Fred |

Yes, a re-install would solve it, but I shouldn't think that's necessary. What does Win7 say about it? Start - Control Panel - Troubleshooting - Indexing Options. In my W7 Ultimate, Indexing Options is under Control Panel, not Trouble Shooting. And, Trouble Shooting is under 'trouble shoot search andindexing' under Advance Options under Index Settings. I selected 'filess do not appear in search results'. That said, it reports it could not identify the problem and in part suggests I get help from a friend or from online support. Have a look through the things displayed. Is indexing complete? Are the locations all ticked? As far as I can tell, indexing is never started - even when I try to redo it. Click "Troubleshooting search and indexing". Let the wizard troubleshoot the issue. That should either solve it or take you closer to the cause of the problem. Ed Thanks anyway Big Fred It sounds as if there's no indexing being done; let alone no search. Have you got the Windows Search service running; automatic (delayed start)? Ed |

UNINSTALL is Prog&Feat in control panel Yes I know - I 'm sorry I confused my English. I know the difference between MSCONFIG and UNINSTALL PROGRAMS. I really want to do both functions as well as others. I have created a desktop shortcut to msconfig.exe that works. But can't find a way to do the same to select a list of installed programs from which to do an uninstall. Still this is a shame to have to do just because the 'search' no longer works. To other respondant - Yes, I have tried just about all of the suggestions posted for this problem found by Googling the topic 'search failing'. None work for me. I'm tired. Thanks Big Fred |

Ed Thanks anyway Big Fred OK, go to Programs and Features control panel. Look on the left for "Turn Windows features on and off". Indexing Service - Turns the indexing service that was available in previous versions of Windows, on and off. Windows Search - Provides content indexing, property caching and search results for files, email, and other content. Try turning off the "Windows Search" one, close and reboot. Then, turn on the "Windows Search" one. See if a re-installation fixes it. Paul |

Thanks Big Fred Sorry if this is a dumb question, but shouldn't you be using the "Run Command" instead of search for the misconfig and regedit commands? If you aren't seeing the Run command in the start menu, go to the Control Panel, then Taskbar, then Customize start menu and make sure that the box for Run Command is checked. Once that is done, the Run Command will show up in the start menu. |

Now how do I bring up the list of installed apps from which I can do an uninstall - like I did in XP? Thanks Big Fred |

Follow Paul's advice about a re-installation of the Search system. And after that (I suggest "as well as that") run a system file check on your whole system; elevated command prompt, "sfc /scannow". Control Panel, Program Features will lead you to a list of installed progs (not "apps"). Ed |

Thanks Big Fred All of your installed programs can be found in the Control Panel under "Programs & Features" Make sure that the "view" for your Control Panel (off to the right side) is large or small icons. For some reason any other views don't show all that is available in the Control Panel |

If you aren't seeing the Run command in the start menu, go to the Control Panel, then Taskbar, then Customize start menu and make sure that the box for Run Command is checked. Once that is done, the Run Command will show up in the start menu. If you type the command (or even just a few letters of it) in the box at the bottom of the Start Menu, Windows *searches* for the command. This is totally normal behavior for Windows 7 (and W8 is similar, in its own way). If you look in that box before you type, you can see that it says (greyed out) "Search programs and files". OP: try tracking down the executables for those programs and creating shortcuts to them on the desktop. Then move those to your Programs folder in C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu That has helped me start them in the above way. %APPDATA% is a useful abbreviation for the Roaming directory, in case yours is not where mine is. -- Gene E.
