Default Computer Management EVENT VIEWER Issue???

Does anyone know if a file might be missing or corrupt?

When I go to Computer Management - Event Viewer - Application and try to
Double Click to open it to view the DETAILS it WON'T open. The screen flashes
like it wants to open, but doesn't - or - when I go to PROPERTIES and RIGHT
click - it OPENS but the information under the GENERAL tab states 'No
Properties are available on this object'. This behavior is also true for IE
- Security & System.

ALL other FOLDERS under COMPUTER MANAGEMENT work properly, ONLY EVENT VIEWER
does NOT...

I am using WINDOWS XP (with current updates incl. SP3) on a Gateway Tablet PC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

It will OPEN the Event Viewer and DOUBLE CLICK works on Item in Event Viewer
(i.e. Application) BUT under APPLICATION (9 events) when I DOUBLE CLICK on
the Type "INFORMATION" the screen Flickers - BUT - DOESN'T open. when doing a
"R" click under PROPERTIES it is still BLANK (i.e. 'No Properties available
on this object').

Safe Mode boot - log in as the actual user "administrator" and try event

Does it work in Safe Mode as the actual administrator user?

Default Computer Management EVENT VIEWER Issue???

cogramma

It is possible the Event Viewer Application log file has corrupted. Try
replacing the log file.

1.. Disable the Event Log service. Select Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Services. Right click on Event Log, select
Properties, and change the StartUp using the scroll from Automatic to
Disable, click on Apply, OK, and exit.
2.. Restart Windows XP.
3.. Delete the corrupt log -Appevent.evt In Windows Explorer locate
the log file C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\AppEvent.Evt and delete
AppEvent.Evt Your existing event data will be lost, but a new log file
will be created when the service is restarted, and that log will
start to accumulate new events.
4.. Re-enable the Event Log service. Select Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Services. Right click on Event Log, select
Properties, and change the StartUp using the scroll from Disable to
Automatic, click on Apply, OK, and exit. Restart Windows XP.

You cannot delete or rename the log files while the Event Log service is
running.

Default Computer Management EVENT VIEWER Issue???

Hi Gerry, I am currently using AVG 7.5 Program Version 7.5.552 Virus Base:
270.10 1/1870 Release Date: 12/31/08; it has been on my Computer since 2/06
and runs every other day. I also downloaded the FREE version of Ad-Aware
2008 yesterday, ran it, it found a bunch of objects and I deleted them,
restarted but that didn't help either.

One note: I run several other programs with no problems, i.e. OUTLOOK 2003,
WORKS 8.0, QUICKEN 2006 etc. The ONLY other problem I am having is that I am
unable to run the INSTALLERS for YAHOO INSTANT MESSENGER Versions 8.0 & 9.0.

Having used Spybot S & D and AdAware I find Spybot better than AdAware

I would also suggest you download and run Spybot S & D (freeware
version) and see if it
finds anything like a Trojan. If Spybot S & D finds anything significant
( other than cookies) you need to be wary. If it removes something and
it returns or another nasty pops up it can be an indication that there
is another hidden nasty not being detected by Spybot.
Spybot S & D. There is a freeware version buried in this link:

What's with the selective upper-case lettering? It's similar to those with
Tourette syndrome verbally - or at least that is how it comes across in your
postings. You may be doing it to emphasize something - but I assure you -
at least for me - it is unnecessary. If you happen to have Tourette
syndrome, I did not know it could come across in the written word. ;-) In
any case- I was just curious.

(1)
Reboot.
With Event Viewer/Computer Management closed...

Start button -- run -- type in:
regsvr32 els.dll
-- Click OK.

Restart the computer and try event viewer again.

If that doesn't work...

(2)
Is the "Event Log" service running?

Start button -- run -- type in:
cmd /k net start "Event Log"
-- Click OK.

What messages come up?

(3)
Make sure you have cleaned up your Event Log files... Ignoring the symptoms,
perform the following:
How to Delete Corrupt Event Viewer Log Files
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/172156
(I believe Gerry may have pointed you down this path before - but in your
case - I would say *all* of your Event Log files may be corrupt. Delete ALL
*.evt files in the proper step - not just one.)

(4)
I suggest downloading, installing, running, updating and performaing a full
system scan (individually - not at the same time) with:
(Free versions are fine.)

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/
MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

And removing whatever they find.

After doing which ever of the above needed - or while doing it - come back
and let us know what changed between the event log working and it not
working... Why did you go in to check your event log in the first place?
What led you to this point?

Default Computer Management EVENT VIEWER Issue???

Shenan, The reason for viewing the Event Log was to look for errors from the
Yahoo Instant Messenger Installer. The IM Installer starts to install but
won't complete. It just goes away without any errors or anything. I was
hoping there would be a message or something in the Application or System
Error Log to point me in the right direction. See other posts for more
information.

I've already tried several spyware anti-virus malware tools etc. Do you
really think running the two programs you recommend will catch something that
the others have missed?

any case- I was just curious.

(1)

Default Computer Management EVENT VIEWER Issue???

cogramma wrote:
Does anyone know if a file might be missing or corrupt?

When I go to Computer Management - Event Viewer - Application and
try to Double Click to open it to view the DETAILS it WON'T open.
The screen flashes like it wants to open, but doesn't - or - when I
go to PROPERTIES and RIGHT click - it OPENS but the information
under the GENERAL tab states 'No Properties are available on this
object'. This behavior is also true for IE - Security & System.

ALL other FOLDERS under COMPUTER MANAGEMENT work properly, ONLY
EVENT VIEWER does NOT...

I am using WINDOWS XP (with current updates incl. SP3) on a Gateway
Tablet PC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

What happens?

It will OPEN the Event Viewer and DOUBLE CLICK works on Item in
Event Viewer (i.e. Application) BUT under APPLICATION (9 events)
when I DOUBLE CLICK on the Type "INFORMATION" the screen Flickers -
BUT - DOESN'T open. when doing a "R" click under PROPERTIES it is
still BLANK (i.e. 'No Properties available on this object').

Safe Mode boot - log in as the actual user "administrator" and try
event viewer there...
Does it work in Safe Mode as the actual administrator user?

I tried SAFE MODE and got the same results!!

What's with the selective upper-case lettering? It's similar to
those with Tourette syndrome verbally - or at least that is how it
comes across in your postings. You may be doing it to emphasize
something - but I assure you - at least for me - it is unnecessary.

Shenan, The reason for viewing the Event Log was to look for
errors from the Yahoo Instant Messenger Installer. The IM
Installer starts to install but won't complete. It just goes away
without any errors or anything. I was hoping there would be a
message or something in the Application or System Error Log to
point me in the right direction. See other posts for more
information.

I've already tried several spyware anti-virus malware tools etc.
Do you really think running the two programs you recommend will
catch something that the others have missed?

Yes.
There is no de-facto standard and/or catch-all in the antispyware business.
Those two can cleanup things the others miss (including Spybot Search and
Destroy and LavaSoft Ad-Aware...)

Did you try the first suggstion and/or the other three already?
Does the first one result in a success message?
