Default XP system file corrupt or missing!! HELP!

Thanks, But I can't get into windows! I bet that fixmbr
will work from the recovery console. Thanks for the help!
-----Original Message-----
I can answer your first question. Get your XP disk or

recovery disk and put it in the drive. When or if the
autoplay opens a window simply close it out. Then
gostart\run and type in sfc /scannow Note the space
after sfc and before the / . SFC=System File Check and
will scan your system for missing or corrupt OS files and
replace them with the originals found on the disk. If you
can't get that far then using the disk follow the on
screen prompts to do a repair install. When in the
recovery console it takes some getting used to commands
and parameters. If you want more information on a command
then type help after the command. For example
fixmbr /help. This will give you the parameters for that
command (fixmbr= fix master boot record) If you want the
commands available to you then simply type in help and hit
enter in the recovery console and you will get a list of
commands.
As for the second question I'm not sure what method you

are using to attempt to right a file or folder to disk.
Usually it's a matter of simply right clicking on a file
or folder and then click "send to (whatever your drive
is)" and then a files waiting to be written to CD icon
will appear in the system tray (beside the clock in the
lower right usually) and double click that to open the
window that you can see what files are waiting as well as
drag more to this window if you want, then simply click
the file\write these files to CD and that does it. You can
also use the NT Backup found under your start\all
programs\accessories\system tools\Backup If you have XP
Home edition the it isn't installed by default (god knows
why not) but it is on your disk. If you do an explore of
your XP CD you will find a valueadd\msft\ntbackup folder
and double click the two little computers icon to install
it to where I mentioned earlier. Have fun. }:~)

I turned on my PC yesterday and and got an error
message that said the "C:\winnt\system32\config\system
file is corrupt or missing. Run the recovery console to
fix it." (I know how to get into the recovery console) I
tried to back up a copy of the system file frim another Xp
machine I had but the file was 1.8MB (too big for
floppy). I tried to burn it to a CD-ROM and it said the
file was in use so I couldn't burn it.
At this point I just wanted to reformat my drive and
stop trying to fix the system error. I tried to copy my
only folder with important stuff in it but when I tried
the "copy C:\games\ D:\backup" it said that it could not
copy an entire directory, only a single file at a time!
So I guess I have to questions:
1. How can I restore the System file mentioned above
without using a floppy because the file is too big. Can I
find it on the XP disk that I using to run the recovery
console?
2. How could I backup one large directory to my second
hard drive through the Recovery console. (ex. C:\Games to
D:\backup)

Any help is appreciated. Either of these methods will work
for me!
