Default Local Area and Wireless working but not visible in Network Connect

I have an IBM ThinkPad T42P running XP SP2 and have the following two problems

1) When I open Network Connections (Control panel\Network & Internet
Connections\Network Connections) I cannot see any entries for my local
network or the wireless even though both are working

2) If I upgrade to SP3 both the Wireless and Local connections die - I have
the latest drivers for both the Local and the Wireless cards

Hi
Disable both cards in the BIOS.
Boot one time without the Network cards.
Enable the cards in the BIOS, and re-install the Network.
This process should refresh the whole Network installation.
