Messenger automatically running & signing in
Hi,
Just recently Windows Messenger starts up and signs in automatically without any visible icon in the taskbar! This is annoying as I don't think I'm signed in and I start receiving messages. I have removed the check marks in Windows Messenger's options and those in Outlook Express but Messenger still likes to sign me in, even if it s a few minutes after boot up! What can I do to resolve this? I don't want to disable Messenger as I use it, but just choose when I sign in! TIA for any help, Dan. |

Greetings Dan,
Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and display this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK. As well, to fully stop Messenger from loading with Outlook Express, download and run this ..reg file: http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...ssenger_oe.reg ____________________________________________ Jonathan Kay Windows MVP, Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com "Dan" no.address@supplied wrote in message ... Thanks for that. Yes, I have Norton AV 2003, but simply disabling the
instant messaging scanning as you suggested hasnt cured the problem. It may have to be an uninstall completely and see if that works. Dan. "Jonathan Kay [MVP]" wrote in message ... Hi Dan,
It's probably just Outlook Express then, to fully stop Messenger from loading with Outlook Express, download and run this .reg file: http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...ssenger_oe.reg You'll need to restart Outlook Express to see the change. ____________________________________________ Jonathan Kay Windows MVP, Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com "Dan" no.address@supplied wrote in message ... Messenger automatically running & signing in
Thanks.
I ran the registry file, but I don't think it is Outlook Express related. However, I'm not sure its Norton related as I have removed my Norton Systemworks completely (uninstall) and I still have a problem. Messenger is set to *not* sign in and indeed it doesn't. It behaves except that when I click X to close the main window, it quits and logs me out. I have to keep the Messenger window either open or minimized. Any more suggestions? Dan. Messenger automatically running & signing in
Hi Dan,
You can fix Messenger so that it will go into the notification area/system tray when you click 'X' by doing the following: If you're using MSN Messenger 4.x or Windows Messenger 4.x, open the main Messenger, click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences tab, and verify that 'Allow this program to run in the background' is checked. If you're using MSN Messenger 5, just right-click the MSN Messenger 5 icon in the notification area (system tray -- by the clock), choose Exit, then download and run the following .reg files: http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...background.reg After running/importing, click Start, then (All) Programs, MSN Messenger 5 to restart MSN Messenger 5. When you click the 'X' now, it should just go down the taskbar as it should. ____________________________________________ Jonathan Kay Windows MVP, Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com "Dan" no.address@supplied wrote in message ...
