Default Modernize your Computers, optimize your Windows* 10 migration

Source: Intel ;-)

The core of the IT for my dental office are 2 Dell workstations I
bought cheap (Dell T5500, T3610, 8 and 5 years old , 24 GB ECC RAM and
32 GB). I don`t see a reason, why they should not run for another 5
years. I added SSDs to them, which was simple. (Samsung data migration
software make migrating the system to a SSD simple).

Privately I just upgraded the PC of my wife (5 years old, went from
Win 7 to 10 a year ago), because the processor is fast enough for
another 5 years. SSD instead of HD, added another 8 GB RAM to the
existing 8 GB. Because the PC of my wife is used as a terminal server
(Thinstuff) by our kids from time to time, more RAM made sense.
Usually their Chromebit and Chromebox CXI3 are more than enough, but
if they need a Windows PC, they use RDP to go on the PC of my wife.

So yes, Intel may have a problem, because single core speed has not
much changed in the last 5 years. Benchmarks:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

And single core is still the limiting factor for many old software.

Finding good old hardware is simple. Google for "used workstation". I
like Dell, but HP, Fujitsu or Lenovo are on offer, too. Professional
hardware for low prices, because for companies time is money and
engineers are expensive, so going to the fastest hardware every 3 to 5
years makes sense.

So as I understand you saved money by spending probably $130 for the
SSD, probably another 50 to 60 for the additional memory, and and $130
for a copy of Windows 10, for a total of about $230; and you still have
a 5 year old single core processor machine.

And you can but a Dellâ„¢ Optiplex 7010 Refurbished Desktop PC, 3rd Gen
Intel® Core™ i5, 16GB Memory, 500GB Hard Drive, Windows® 10 Professional
for $279
(https://www.officedepot.com/a/produc...ed-Desktop-PC/)

And you saved money?

It's probably cheaper to unscrew the CIO and
replace it with a new one.

Any company worth its salt, is on a three year lease
cycle. So this "CIO" advice wouldn't apply to them,
since they're already on the "rinse and repeat"
conveyor belt. The company can, of course, be loading
Win7 or Win10 on it when it comes on. A separate decision.

At my former employer, the total all-in cost of changing
the OS, was claimed to be $100 million dollars. Which is
why the deployment at the time was delayed. This would be
a drop in the bucket for GG, whose employer is made of money.

There's nothing for a home user to gain from
excessive replacement. Even a quad core Q6700 still
has sufficient horsepower for modern software. And
the owner doesn't need to replace it.

https://ark.intel.com/products/30790...-1066-MHz-FSB-

Launch Date Q3'07
Instruction Set 64-bit
Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) Yes === Optional, for VirtualBox etc
[EPT/SLAT Nope] === Hyper-V

And that was eleven years ago.

No, you didn`t get it. The upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 was free (or
the license for a Win 10 Pro is about 15 USD here in germany).

And a workstation is not a desktop PC. I told what I bought, you
should google a bit. Hint: Both have processors with 4 cores plus
hyperthreading, meaning 8 logical cores (both machines are used for
virtual machines, that`s why they have 24 and 32 GB RAM).

you think "migrating" from something REAOSONABLE (like windows 7) to

Yeah they *REALLY* *****ED* *UP* by hitching their 'success wagon' to

Any established company worth its salt is sitting on a mountain of
cash today (after several good years). Why it should lease if the
money in the bank does not earn interest but the leasing company wants
to make a profit, too?

The Q6700 has a single thread benchmark of 1031 (total: 3288)
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php...6GHz&id= 1039

That`s enough for an office PC. A few months ago I bought a Shuttle
DX30 (fanless, no noise at all) with an even weaker processor
(816/1180):
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php...0GHz&id=296 0
For some surfing and as a terminal client it`s working well.

My wife`s little Zotac-Box (2013) has an i7-4770T (2070/8634):
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php....50GHz&id=2006
That`s almost as fast as the 5 years old Dell workstation T3610 (with
32 GB ECC RAM and one HD) I bought a few weeks ago for about 600 USD.
So upgrading my wife`s PC with SSD and RAM was an easy decision.

M.

It is also available from german refurbishers:
https://www.itsco.de/pc-dell-optiple...4x-3-3ghz.html
But it only has an Intel Core i5-3550 (1972/6940):
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php...3.30GHz&id=825

Which means, that it is slower than the 5 years old PC of my wife. My
wife`s little Zotac-Box (2013) has an i7-4770T (2070/8634):
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php....50GHz&id=2006

So yes, putting an SSD and more RAM in this 5 years old PC was the
better solution.

Windows 10 is better than Windows 7.
I never could get bluetooth audio streaming working with W7
but with W10 it just works.

Fixed in Win8, actually.

Or maybe his Windows 10 machine is a different one than his Windows 7
machine. If so, the fix might actually have been a different chipset, a
different location of the antenna/antennas, etc., etc..

Not to mention that I already used Bluetooth on my 15++ year old XP
laptop to connect to a mobile-phone for mobile Internet. Nokia rocks!
