Yes, lots.

Then what about a paid Explorer replacement ?

Yes, a few.

I DO NOT WANT a bunch of extra bells and whistles, just a better
Explorer. I do not need more confusion.

I can't remember if FreeMan said which Windows he's on. (It works well
in 7 and 8.)

Default Windows / File Explorer Replacement

I downloaded both the v17 free standard and portable versions.

I am trying the portable first.

Win 10 fought me all the way trying to unzip and "install" the portable
version.

So far it looks interesting but does have many bells and whistles but
maybe I can get use to it.

I am looking for "Take Ownership" capability for win 10.

Does these versions have that or similar ?

My wife uses it in Windows 10, and it works well there too. I
personally prefer Start 10, but she likes Classic Shell, and has never
even tried Start 10.

However, neither of these is an Explorer replacement.

But it does _tweak_ explorer somewhat - for example, by default it puts
back the lines and [+]/[-] in the tree view pane. (Almost worth having -
possibly is - for that alone. Though explorer++ as suggested earlier in
this thread did too [unless that's because I had Classic running when I
tried it].)

It may be too much for you, but there are portable versions you can play
with: http://freecommander.com/en/downloads-portable/

Look like Explorer++ is what I want.
Will exercise it extensively and put it to the test.
Explorer++ has a portable mode and can show folder sizes.
see Tools / Options.
It is fast and does not have the silly problems that Windows / File
Explorer has.

XYplorer looks very good too but seems to have more bells and whistles
than I need. More confusion than I need.

Thanks all !

I'm using this too in portable mode and like the fact it can replace the
Windows File Explorer completely if you want it to. It has a single click
option I had to set and I chose the middle of the three options to replace
Explorer. That option sets all file folders to open with it except system
folders like "My computer" and "Network" and " "Control panel".

Any open source ones you like as well?

This has a clean interface (imo), loads really fast, and allows
multiple tabs - which can be very useful.
https://explorerplusplus.com/

Agreed, it's clean, very fast (instant for me), and also is a single
executable that doesn't seem to require any installation. I see among
its options that you can select whether it replaces explorer or not;
can't quite see how that would work, unless you run it at startup, or it
actually deletes the default explorer which would be dangerous.

Agreed replacing explorer, I kept things simple and placed a
shortcut to it on the taskbar. I've been using it for a couple of months
and it's really nice having the multiple tabs. Middle-click on a folder
opens that folder in a new tab, fast and convenient.

Yeah, I refrained from mentioning Explorer++ (even tho I use it myself)
because it is very old and buggy (try editing the settings file, you
will discover full of inconsistencies and non-working settings). I'm not
sure it is solid enough for everyday use.

Yeah, it look gorgeous, but I have not yet had occasion to try it.

Best Regards,

I'm thinking Linux is an alternative.

Think of the stories you'll have to tell when you get back.

lol

It's pretty great until you get there.
