Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
Hi Shelleyanne,
Also had the same problem with the files and transfer wizard and found the following worked for me. "Copy the directory C:\windows\system32\usmt" from the OLD computer and replace the same directory on the NEW computer. Suggest you copy to usmt directory on the new machine to a safe place first in case you need to restore it later. The usmt directory contains the executable files for the Files & Transfer Wizard. My OLD computer had fully updated files and a number of the files in the usmt directory had more recent dates than the usmt directory on the NEW computer. I also copied the USMT2 directory to the desktop of the NEW computer and used that as the source for the restore. Hopes this helps -- David "shelleyanne" wrote: All of my updates are current. I have them installed automatically. I will try to uninstall it though just in case it somehow wasn't on the original computer. That could be possible if it came out after January. That is when I did the transfer wizard and have been fighting with it ever since. "Kerry Brown" wrote: "MarkInSalemOR" wrote in message news I'm in the same boat and I can't get my files back. The rv2opq tool referred to at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fast.htm indicates the img00001.dat files are corrupt, the header file is damaged. The fastconv tool has no more luck than the wizard has. And I've launched the wizard from both XP with full updates and the XP CD rom. Unfortunately I can't go back and re-run the wizard since the whole process here was a reformat of the original hard drive. Oh and I have more than one of these files, I ran this for all five of my families user profiles and all 5 are corrupt. Someone made reference of being able to open the .dat file and could see their files in it. All I get is encrypted garbage, is there a tool I'm missing out there that I can use to save what I can? If this is the case then uninstall it from the target or install it on the source and try the transfer again. Kerry |

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
Ok, I just used the wizard to back up my settings. Then reformated. When I
booted back into windows, I got this same error. I went to the windows update site and re-installed all the undates that I had the first time. During this I noticed a patch in the Software, Optional talking about this settings and file transfer wizard and 32 vs 64 bit systems. After installing this update, like I had on my old setup, I was ABLE TO GET ME SETTINGS TRANSFERED. You just need to point it to the directory where the folder USMT2.UNC is. Don't point it at the folder, just to the directory where that folder is located. So for me it was F:\USMT2.UNC..... So I pointed it to the F:\ and it worked just fine. Hope this helps. Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (Win98 - WinXP Home)
I am having a similar problem, but in my case there maybe some hardware issues complicating things so... OLD MACHINE: WIN98, 3 1/2 floppy, NO CDROM, Local Network NEW MACHINE: WINXP H, DVD/CD writer, NO FLOPPY, Local Network Being unable to create a wizard disk (wizard doesn't see the DVD/CD-R) I used a mapped CD drive to run the wizard from an XP install disk (SP1) I ran the wizard on the old machine, and it created a transfer file on the network server. I then ran the wizard on the new machine. It ran seemingly o.k. for about 1/2 an hour, then finished, telling me to log of to finish the process. When I logged on no changes to the desktop or files. I tryed a number of variations on this theme, with no better results. I then called tech support (HP/Compaq) where we tried a couple other variations with no luck. If I were only porting the one machine, I'd have done it by hand by now. but I have another one to do also and THAT user is the boss who is not going to like it if his new machine doesn't look and work extremely like his old machine. (I'm tempted to create an image of the disk with DiskImage and wipe out the XP version on the new machine, and install it as a 98 box. Maybe after that I could upgrade it to XP....) Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. *Begin soapbox* Myself, I'm just waiting for Linux to become a more viable desktop box. I'm tired of paying and paying and paying and paying for OPERATING SYSTEM software which is half-baked! I've personally spent at least $2K on MS OS's and been disappointed every time. I've spent at least $1M on MS OS's and software for clients, and wished that I had a better alternative (i.e. one acceptable to the management.) backup using F&S Xfr--I would not use a MS product for backups. I've had too much trouble with Backup and the XP system 'restore' (which usually won't!) MS doesn't test their products enough before shipping (why I'm always the last on the block to upgrade-I like some feedback first!) They also (admittedly they are not alone) need to change the way they write manuals. All manuals seem to be written as reminders to someone who already at one point 'knew' what the manual is saying. There need to be manuals written so that anignorant (not stupid, just unfamiliar with the product!) can easily find, understand, and use the information. All to often, manuals cover (in depth!) the simplest everyday information, but the stuff which is used rarely is covered by a 'one-liner' which is of little use to the person who seldom uses the feature. This is *EXACTLY* the opposite of what is needed! *end soapbox* |

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
OK - I read the whole thread on the Wizard and I have a different challenge.
I am setting up a new computer and wanted to transfer outlook, favorites etc. from the old PC. User guide says - No Problem, use the transfer wizard, sounds great. Problem is the new computer came with a DVD+RW which is drive "E". Drive "E" is not in the wizrds pull down menu - only a bunch of removable drives F thru H which I don't even have ???? I created a trest file in WORD and saved it to a CD using "Somic" which came with the new PC and that worked fine. Why doesn't "Wizard" know that I have an "E" drive??? Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
I just wanted to let the people posting in this forum about the file transfer wizzard that I too was having this same problem. I have restored the data by a suggestion made above about the optional update K893644. First I went in to the Add Remove Hardware (located in the control panel) and selected the "show updated box" to show the updates installed. I noticed that update was not there and decided to find it and download/install it. When I went to Microsoft update, it is not listed when you press express for updates. Choose the custom button. I found it listed there and got the update. After installing the update I no longer got the error saying there were no data files in the folder. But for me, I had to choose the folder the USMT2 file is locate not the folder itself. ie D:\Backup (which is were I had mine located). Hope this helps anyone else experiancing this problem. Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
Hello
I've now experienced this problem on several computers, so condolences to anyone finding this. The item "K893644" mentioned is not amenable to search on Microsoft support, although since Mathlete wrongly suggested "Add Remove Hardware " which is manifestly wrong (it should be Add Remove Programs) perhaps his reference is wrong as well. The KB article which would seem to be appropriate to this issue (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312965/en-us) is full of so much gobbily gook that I can understand why someone would consider suicide while trying to use FAST or FSTW (some of the gobbily gook). Bottom line -- this is a real mess. Since no MVP has stepped into this mess again, I think we must infer that this is an intractible problem. Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
Hi
My F&TW did its thing, right to the end, and then said that the version of XP on my old PC was older than that on my new one (you dont say! isnt that why we're using it in the first place!?) Anyway "About Windows" said they were both the same 5.1 SP2... so now I'm really confused. Then read this post about copying the usmt folder.. (even that was a bit fraught... it obviously wasnt keen on me doing it... said I could not rename as the file was in use... though the wizard was closed - I even tried rebooting and it still said it was in use, but I persevered, trying a 'copy' over the existing having made a duplicate elsewhere, and again it said 'file in use' but it had obviously copied some of the files across from the usmt directory. Anyway, re-ran the wizard and it worked! So thank you David C! cheers Mark "David-C" wrote: Hi Shelleyanne, Also had the same problem with the files and transfer wizard and found the following worked for me. Mark, I totally agree with you....This transfer wizard has also cost me all
of my files and settings!!!! Luckily for me, the disk that I saved my wives settings on loaded ok so it's just bad, rather than horrendous. My advice is back it up manually, or be prepared to lose years of hard work! Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
I was having the same problems as many other posters. I had made a backup
form my old computer using the file and settings transfer wizard. When I tried to open the backup file (USMT2.UNC) on my new computer (I had saved the USMT2.UNC file to an external drive) I received the error saying it could notfind the backup file. I installed the plug-in (KB896344) and it found the folder when I pointed it to my drive which contained the USMT2.UNC. As others have posted You have to point it only to the drive or disk which contains the backup, not the folder (ex: F:\). I hope this helps someone and I would not use windows to backup files again. I would use a third party software like Roxio or Nero. "Dee" wrote: I have the same problem and found the fix (KB896344) but I am unable to install it. Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
I just got stuck in the same situation. Horrified. Our company backs up all
of our corporate stuff and each of our "My Documents", but I didn't realize some of these payroll folders on our HR clerks weren't being backed up. When I ran Files and Settings Transfer, I stored it on a second drive. Then reformatted her drive. When I wanted to restore, the same story as you. After searching on the web, I downloaded KB896344. After I rebooted, it restored the dat file on my second drive. I sure hope you find the solution for you dat file. "shelleyanne" wrote: I cannot get my files and settings transfered. Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
I spent hours trying to figure out a similar problem and luckily ran across
this website that fixed my problem. They have three different things to check and mine was the third one which involved Migwiz.exe files that were different on both computers. I updated the old one to the new version and bam, works like a charm. Here is the website: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fast.htm Hope this helps!! |

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
Hi to all just adding my comments
I have used F+STW for years as I upgrade, build, rebuild and reload PCs. I do not trust it as I have had problems with it so I always back up my files to disk anyway. I HAVE FOUND; It's the speed of the re install. I set a folder on the desktop and run the collection wizard to store into it. I then copy this folder across my network to another PC. If I use an external drive (as the old drive was full I just plug this into a second PC on the network.) It seems faster to colect first to a folder and then copy that to a second pc. I then rebuild the offending pc. I install the KB896344 patch and all updates on the new or rebuilt pc. I then run the install side of transfer wizard but use the folder "USMT2.UNC" located on my network so that the network slows the file transfere rate down to 100mbps. Having used the F+STW for years it is the only way that works for me as many times the USMT2.UNC is to large for a CD or DVD. and again I think if you use your network to slow the reload down you will have better luck with it. And back up your files to disk just use the F+STW as an easy solution. "shelleyanne" wrote: I cannot get my files and settings transfered.
