Default Windows file name & content search freeware that works better than the native Windows search tools

Which freeware Windows file & file content search tool do you use, and why?

Do you recommend a freeware Windows search tool not in this list?
o agentransack
o astrogrep
o auslogics
o copernic
o docfetcher
o everything
o exselo
o filesearchex
o fileseek
o googledesktop
o grepwin
o jetsearch
o lansearchpro
o launchy
o listary
o locate32
o lookeen
o malich
o puggle
o quicksearch
o registry_finder
o searchmyfiles
o ultrasearch

I ran this survey today as a direct offshoot from this thread...
o Ver 2004 Produces Very Slow file searches
https://alt.comp.os.windows-10.narkive.com/NuuBCq7G/ver-2004-produces-very-slow-file-searches

Given the huge expense of freeware is in finding just the one or two tools
that work best, I simply ask for what freeware you use, and why you like it
for searches of file names & contents of files on all versions of Windows.

here is a Windows command to find files by name but not by contents:
o Win+R cmd{control+shift+enter}
c:\ dir c:\*.* /s/a/l/on/b date_salonb.txt
c:\ dir *.* /s/a/l/on/b | findstr "foo"
Or, now with the freeware WSL installed in the later Windows 10 versions:
o Win+R wsl locate . | grep -i foo

Here's a quick survey of the available freeware Windows search tools.

The federated search in Windows 10 works, but whether the
default tick boxes are to your liking, is another issue.

Once the tick boxes are set, it works.

But like warm beer, it's an acquired taste kind of thing.
Some want filename only searches, and that's why the
ecosystem has choices.

If you want specific kinds of searches to be done from the
File Explorer search box, you use the search language for that.
Using these, adds a measure of precision to what you're doing,
instead of getting splattered with irrelevant references.

ext:dll

filename:fredbloggs

That sort of thing. If you use a date: specifier, there is
an onscreen calendar so you can set a date range graphically.

Knowing these things, is a vertical learning curve.

The computer doesn't exactly tell you what to do.

And the microsoft.com website advice on search language,
well, good luck on finding the current version. I'm just
going by old versions when I cough up examples like that.

I doubt *any* help page in Windows 10 actually works
worth a darn. You're likely to be plopped on some idiotic
landing page for your trouble. And they have a long
tradition of busting that stuff (help), so this should not
come as a surprise or a recent surprise. If you see
a link ("more info"), well, you just know a waste of
your time awaits. They have 7000 developers and... nobody cared.

Hi Paul,

Just so you know, in decades on Usenet, there are only two people I've had
to plonk (where my vim-telnet-based scripted setup doesn't have an
automatic killfile so it's work to put them in my dictionary lookups),
because they were _that_ psychopathically scary, and one of them was this
Alan Baker you responded to.

Like all Usenet trolls, he has zero purposefully helpful intent; but worse,
like the Diesel trolls, he has that peculiar combination of Quadrant I
Dunning Kruger (i.e., so stupid he's the only one who doesn't realize it),
but what makes him dangerous is his psychopathic stalking.

He follows me around the Internet where I no longer see his posts unless
someone responds, where, since his posts are never intended to be
purposefully helpful, the responses also are a waste, even, as yours is, if
they're meant to be purposefully helpful.

Enough said about this Snit-like psychopathic stalker - now on to the two
key questions, one of which is why does the (previously suggested) Agent
Ransack fare so poorly in any Internet ranking save for an alphabetical
rank?

I realize on the other thread about Win10v2004, multiple people, including
you, recommended Agent Ransack...
o Ver 2004 Produces Very Slow file searches
https://narkive.com/NuuBCq7G.2
Paul: "The inverted index is stored in Windows.edb (which you can
find with third-party Agent Ransack or with Everything.exe
(voidtools) search program."
https://narkive.com/NuuBCq7G.3
KenBlake: "I don't know whether I have the problem or not, since I
don't use the built-in Windows search. Instead I use Search
Everything for searches by file name, and Agent Ransack for
searches by file content. They are both free and both much
faster and better than what comes with Windows."

Notice _both_ of you suggested (purposefully fully):
o Agent Ransack
o Everything

But when I searched, while "Everything" showed up as the top 1 or 2
freeware search on Windows, paradoxically, Agent Ransack didn't even show
up on most lists, where on the one review it did show up on, it was about
1/3rd of the way down, which is surprising, given the difference between
Agent Ransack reviews and Everything reviews - side by side with helpful
user input.
https://thegeekpage.com/13-best-desktop-search-tools-for-windows/
"It's an easy to use program that comes with a well-written instruction
manual and can be easily used even by the beginners"

Given you've used Agent Ransack, and that others recommended it, can you
help me understand why it might not have ranked as well as the rest, as
that's perplexing to me.

That's part of the reason for opening this thread, which is to get user
input for Windows freeware search replacements.

Also perplexing is what's wrong with the Windows searches where you
explained a little to the troll above, where, personally, I don't ever need
a Windows search (I know where I put my files as you're well aware)
o Philosophy on a tutorial for setting up Windows in a well organized
KISS philosophy such that search is never needed & reinstall is trivial
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/1Gf59YRkaI8

Note that I espouse setting up a system such that you already know where
most files are that you actually care about, such that a search is rarely
required.

Nonetheless, a search can be needed every few months or so, where it's nice
to have the best freeware search tool already at your disposal, which is
the point of this thread.

In summary, my two related on-topic questions you can help answer are...
1. Why didn't the user-recommended Agent Ransack show well in the reviews?
2. Of the two-dozen tools, which one or two do most people use & recommend?

(Any reason why this was going to XP and 10, but not 7, 'groups?)

For just filename searches: Everything. Why? Its speed amazes me; nearly
always finds the file before I've finished typing. And I can type two
parts of the filename separated by spaces.

For content search: Agent Ransack. Why? Well, I rarely _want_ to do a
content search, and that seemed to be the most recommended/used here
when I was thinking of installing one, and it seems to work well enough
(both speed of searching and search facilities) that I don't feel the
need to look further, for the little I need of this sort of search. (I
don't expect a content search to be fast, by its nature; AR seems fast
enough.)

Why are you asking - what is your actual _requirement_? (Will it morph?)

And you get both filename searches, content searches and any other

Hi J.P. Gilliver, aka John,

I'm always thinking _years_ in advance, whenever I post a new thread here.

It's best for you to assume nothing I do on Usenet is by happenstance...
.. Particularly when I spend hours on the original research for the thread

Here's fundamentally my logic on the three newsgroups which were chosen:
a. The research pertains to _freeware_ that works on Windows computers
b. It pertains to _all_ common Windows' versions though, as you noted
c. Yet, I try to limit the Newsgroups list to _3_ based on Usenet etiquette

In addition, I do far-reaching forward-thinking things, that almost nobody
does, and for which the trolls hate me, which, I understand, but I do these
forward-thinking things for a good re-use and general-use purpose
.. I strive to make at least one newsgroup in the deja-google archives

Notice that knocks out this newsgroup list, since none are deja-googled!
.. http://tinyurl.com/alt.comp.os.windows-10 == this archive sucks
.. http://tinyurl.com/alt-comp-os-windows-8 == this archive sucks
.. http://tinyurl.com/alt.windows7.general == this archive sucks
etc.

But, luckily, these related newsgroups _are_ well deja-googled:
.. http://tinyurl.com/alt-comp-freeware == this archive is great!
.. http://tinyurl.com/microsoft-public-windowsxp-gen (30-char limit)

BTW, I should know, as I'm the one who _created_ these tinyurls.
.. I do that so we _all_ benefit from every action that we each take.

What the score of well-known *worthless pieces of **** like Ken Blake*
hate, are these facts that I post for the permanent Usenet record, and not
for the whim of the day... which I don't deny them.

In addition, if I'm going to spend a lot of energy on a thread, as I did
here, I'm going to make the subject line keyword rich, and I'm going to
_not_ post it _just_ to the non-deja-googled newsgroups, as it's
essentially a waste (long term) to post anything to the Windows 10 ng alone
(sadly so).

Of course, there are _other_ "permanent" archives, but they also suck:
.. http://alt.comp.os.windows-10.narkive.com == sucks
.. http://alt.comp.os.windows-8.narkive.com == sucks
.. http://alt.windows7.general.narkive.com == sucks
.. http://microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.narkive.com == sucks
.. http://alt.comp.freeware.narkive.com == sucks
etc.

For just filename searches: Everything. Why? Its speed amazes me; nearly
always finds the file before I've finished typing. And I can type two
parts of the filename separated by spaces.

Ah! this is GREAT information, as we all know that it's hard to trust
so-called "reviews" as many are shills, copies, and, even when they're
good, they're often outdated or they don't answer the specific question.

Thank you for explaining why you enjoy "Everything" (which is the speed!).

Now we get to _why_ "Everything" was on top of everything...
.. This cite ranked "Everything" as number 1 of 13, saying:
https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-best-free-search-tools-windows-10/
"Everything is consistently lauded as one of the fastest search tools
for Windows. Using it is as simple as it gets: install it, open the
program, and give it a bit to index your entire system.
(It can index a fresh Windows install in under a minute.)
Once that¢s done, all you have to do is type anything into the text
field and you will get instantaneous results as you type.
And as long as you allow Everything to sit in the background
and monitor system changes, it will always be instantaneous.
Best of all, it¢s lightweight and takes up less than 5MB of RAM
and 1MB of disk space. This is the absolute best tool to use for
old and slow computers."

.. This cite ranked "Everything" as number 1 of 5, saying:
https://www.maketecheasier.com/windows-10-search-tools-super-charge-searches/
"Its name derives from the fact that it displays every file and folder
on your PC - hence, Everything. So what is Everything like to use?
*Everything can be installed and used on any Windows machine from XP*
to 10. When you first boot it, it goes through your files and folders
and indexes them. A fresh install of Windows 10 (about 70,000 files)
will take about 1 second to index. 1,000,000 files will take about
1 minute. Once done, you can then use Everything to search all your
files and folders. The main boon of Everything over Window¢s own search
is that it works instantaneously; the files that match your search are
shown the moment you type each letter. This means less time waiting for
the search function to trawl through your files and folders and more
time getting what you want. It¢s also incredibly light, with an index of
one million files taking up only 50MB of RAM & 15MB of Hard Drive space"

.. This cite ranked "Everything" as number 2 of 8, saying:
https://www.lifewire.com/11-free-file-search-tools-1356644
"Everything is another free file search tool for Windows with a super
clean program interface that supports tons of awesome features.
You can use Everything to search from the Windows right-click context
menu and find files across several NTFS drives at once, both internal
and external ones.
As you begin searching for files, the results show up instantly
there's no need to wait or press Enter. Newly added or modified files
are added to Everything in real time, so there's no need to manually
re-index the database. According to the Everything website,
it takes one second to index around a million files.
There's a toggle in Everything's settings you can use to exclude any
custom, system, or hidden file and folder from search results to
narrow down what you're looking for.
Everything also includes an HTTP and FTP server so you can access
the files of networked computers that also have the program installed.
It would seem the features would stop here, but Everything is even
free for commercial use, includes a portable download option,
and lets you save searches as bookmarks for easy recall."

.. This cite ranked "Everything" as number 1 of 13, saying:
https://thegeekpage.com/13-best-desktop-search-tools-for-windows/
"Everything is one of the leading desktop search tools that pulls up
files and folders by name, instantly. It comes with a compact
installation file making it easy to install. It sports a neat and
straightforward user interface. The best part is, it indexes files
quickly and even offers quick search. This tool takes up minimal
resources to find the files you are looking for. While it helps you
share files with others effortlessly, it also offers real-time updates."

don't expect a content search to be fast, by its nature; AR seems fast
enough.)

Thank you for that, third so far, commendation for "agent ransack", which,
as I noted, only showed up once in four separate reviews that had a lot of
overlap otherwise.

I _trust_ your opinion, and that of Paul, so I'm sure Agent Ransack is a
keeper, where, personally, I've downloaded them all but I won't ever have
time to test them all (particularly given I don't do searches, in general,
since my philosophy is to organize the system for files you care about):
.. *Philosophy on a tutorial for setting up Windows* in a well organized
KISS philosophy such that search is never needed & reinstall is trivial
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/1Gf59YRkaI8

Why are you asking - what is your actual _requirement_? (Will it morph?)

I stated why in the OP, but I'll flesh it out as you're an adult, so it's
not like the worthless pieces of **** like Alan Baker asking why I ask.

As you're aware by now, my philosophy is to never "need" a search, simply
due to the fact I plan years ahead by storing files on all files I care
about from Windows XP to Windows 10 in the _same_ location, such that,
literally, even my Windows XP cascade Start menu works fine on Windows 10.

Each time I set up a new Windows 10, I simply copy over the menu and it
just works, out of the box, first time, simply because of that well-planned
consistency in storing things I care about in the same location on all
systems.

This even extends to my neighbor's computer, which, for example, I just set
up yesterday, using the _same_ hierarchy that I use on all my systems, and
those of my kids, and grandkids, etc. (M$ should have hired me to do their
GUI before they screwed it up!).
.. Is there freeware extent to convert Win10S to Win10H
WITHOUT enabling the Win10S laptop Wi-Fi?

In summary, since you're an adult and since you're generally purposefully
helpful, note that almost everything I do on Usenet is forward thinking,
where my threads (and/or posts) are _intended_ to be useful years ahead,
and hence even their subject lines are intended to be keyword-rich to be
found in future search engines.

In this case, what happened was people recommended two tools, one of which
showed up highly in all the reviews I found, while the other barely made
the list - which I found inconsistently interesting enough to run a survey.

(Will it morph?)

Rest assured, if I find something interesting in this search, such as the
huge inconsistency between a WSL and Windows search for *.dll on the same
system that Paul piqued my interest upon, then it will morph.

But, until/unless it morphs, the purpose is exactly as stated in the OP.
.. *The end result of this thread should be 1 or 2 "keeper" search tools!*

For that, we _need_ user input, which I appreciate from you & Paul so far.

Note worthless Apple & Windows trolls follow me around like a dog sniffing
the asscrack of something they like, so if you see me responding to the
Apple worthless pieces of **** like Alan Baker or the Windows worthless
piece of **** Ken Blake (and, likely some worthless pieces of **** from the
freeware or WinXP newsgroups), you'll note how differently I respond to
those worthless pieces of ****, than to a purposefully helpful adult.

UPDATE:
https://i.postimg.cc/V6k49g23/winsearch01.jpg

I just ran a "sudo updatedb" on Windows, so now I get ~75K dlls:
.. locate .dll | grep \.dll\$ | wc -l
.. REPORTS: 72683

Given I can't recall _ever_ using Windows' search...

For a test, I'd like to compare the WSL search to the Windows' search
mechanism, which I admit, I don't even know how to use, offhand...
(I don't even have Cortana visible, for example).

My "finger memory" instinctively knows how to make a WSL search for DLLs
.. Win+R wsl sudo updatedb
.. $ locate .dll | grep \.dll\$ | wc -l

While Linux is essentially intuitive to many of us, how to search on
Windows is not in the least intuitive to me, since I almost never do it.

Looking up how to run a proper Windows search in the first place...
o *How to Search in Windows 10*
https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-search-in-windows-10
Nugget 1:
"This search feature was once closely tied to Cortana, but the
Windows 10 May 2019 Update split the two apart."
Nugget 2:
"With the Windows 10 November 2019 Update, Windows Search is
now integrated into the search function in File Explorer."

That article says to "click the Windows search box at the bottom left of
your screen", which is where all articles begin to fail, as there is no
Windows search box on my system (nor would it be on the bottom left anyway,
which is why it's folly, IMHO, for tutorials to assume any one
configuration).

Nonetheless, moving on, it says by default it shows the "top apps", which,
of course, mine doesn't (all that stuff was turned off long ago) so I skip
to the section titled "Search in Files Explorer".

There I search the system for ".dll" (yes, I know it will catch .dll in the
middle of a file name), which runs for a while and then reports:
.. Search Results in This PC .dll
REPORTS: 215,782 Items

(Yes, I know it's not exactly the same search criteria.)

For the permanent Usenet record, I know Mayayana well...
.. He came to us, in this thread, because he infests the Win7 newsgroup.

I ignore Mayayana, except that he _loves_ to smell my asscrack
.. And then make a comment about it, which is completely unwarranted

And completely off topic
.. And worthless

And yet, that's exactly what Mayayana _always_ does
.. I know him well... and I ignore him... unless he attacks my credibility.

And then, I defend, as always, with facts.
.. Facts which, mind you, are Mayayana's weakness.

Mayayana simply makes everything up he claims (as he just did just now).

*As always, Mayayana proves, yet again, to be utterly ignorant.*
.. He's not a "bad person", nor even a troll... but just ignorant.

The _reason_ he's ignorant is something I've studied about him...
.. Basically, Mayayana trusts his instinct far more than he trusts facts.

I can't count the number of times Mayayana has made erroneous claims...
.. Based _purely_ on Mayayana's instinct... sans a single fact.

It's like when I told Mayayana, years ago, that not all people who wear ski
masks are bank robbers, even as _he_ trusts his instinct that they are.

It's like when I told Mayayana years ago that not all jews are out to rip
him off, not all blacks are out to mug him, not all germans are nazi's,
etc.

But Mayayana _insists_ on believing his own intuition more so than facts.
.. It's why I've said, for years, Mayayana proves to be ignorant.

Like he just did here.
.. This is sad, because Mayayana is not stupid like Alan Baker is.

Mayayana may actually be intelligent (even as he's almost always wrong).

The _reason_ Mayayana is almost always wrong is simply he's immune to facts
.. Mayayana proves, time and again, to trust his instinct more than facts.

The record clearly shows Mayayana dead wrong, and even the worthless piece
of **** Alan Baker can vouch for the fact this was _never_ posted to Mac
groups.

Why Mayayana is so easily shown to almost always be _dead wrong_ is a
history that he simply doesn't like me (and that's fine).

Yet, the fact Mayayana doesn't like me is no excuse for his racist
behavior, which I've outlined in the past.

Basically, unlike me, Mayayana is almost totally intuitive.
.. Me? I don't trust my instinct one bit.

I trust in facts.
.. People like Mayayana simply bull**** like you can't believe.

Those who trust only in their instinct, like Mayayana, are often wrong.

Hi John,

I've been searching for the best freeware for _decades_, John.
* It's not at all unusual for me to seek the best freeware for any task.

I set up a lot of systems for myself, for my friends, and even for my
neighbors on both Android and Windows for the most part (as iOS stinks like
you can't possibly believe for re-use of archived installed freeware apps).

I have a complete hierarchy of best freeware apps for all categories.
.. In fact, I've downloaded all the search apps mentioned in this thread:
https://i.postimg.cc/LstX1B7r/winsearch02.jpg

Now it's time to _test_ them, where asking here helps create the short list
of the top couple of Windows search apps out of the two dozen I downloaded:
c:\ dir /b
agentransack
astrogrep
auslogics
copernic
docfetcher
everything
exselo
filesearchex
fileseek
googledesktop
grepwin
jetsearch
lansearchpro
launchy
listary
locate32
lookeen
malich
puggle
quicksearch
readthis.txt
registryfinder
searchmyfiles
ultrasearch

Bear in mind I archive all the best free apps on both Android & Windows:
.. What other _useful_ freeware is there to install on my new 64GB Android phone?
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/bHUrZSkL6us
.. My quick review of offline Android freeware mapping & routing applications

.. Is there a non Google freeware traffic app
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/Ve_2cgliiGk
.. What decent free offline no-login privacy-enabled road map apps exist for Android users to enjoy?
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/YadPNimUcu8
.. What freeware graphical Wi-Fi debugging tools do you use on Android & iOS to graph signal strength for available APs over time?
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/TBGbpvnqfLY
.. What free non-root Android backup & restore solution do you recommend for general use?
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/jZ8IxxgXFys
.. Which free contact optimizer duplicate removal contacts merger app do you like best & why?
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/YheUv3Cl5aM

.. Do you have a working freeware automatic sync between Android & Windows?

.. Which freeware image watermarking app do you use on Android?
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/uqs_IWdKB2Q
.. If not the default, what free Android keyboard are you using & why do you like it?
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/CmZAI0OsXDs
etc.

As such, I always strive to archive the best freeware on common platforms
.. I do that for Android; I do it for Windows, and I do it for iOS.

This, for example, is, in some ways, the same question, only for Android:
.. Freeware to list all apps to editable text file of URLs, automatic backup of all versions, & restore
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/vKeIRGMVMu8

*I'm _always_ seeking the best freeware for common tasks.*

I consider myself as knowledgeable in freeware...
.. So much, that I almost never (in decades) needed to purchase software.

In this case, the history of this best freeware quest was simply:
1. Someone asked on the Win10 ng about Win10v2004 search improvements;
2. More than one person suggested two third-party freeware search tools;
3. This quest started as I researched those two third-party search tools.

Multiple things piqued my interest when I researched those 2 search tools:
a. The freeware was said to be better than the Windows native search tools.
b. My search revealed one of the suggested tools is universally acclaimed.
c. Yet, the second suggested tool was almost never even listed.
--
This quest is no different than, oh, scores, hundreds, maybe thousands of
other similar best-freeware quests (if I mention an actual number, the
worthless piece of **** trolls like Cybe(r) Wizard will be all over me to
"prove it", even as they never add any value themselves).

windows explorer is a liar.
Of course other programs work better.
at least if you went back to 3.1, and took
the windows explorer from there, and put it in
the windows 7, you would be able to see the true directory.
But even to see what is there, u have to undo the hide and seek
switches, or you will not see the system files, or any of the other
files that are hid. But never, will you get a proper directory
from anything of Microsoft. So, I would advice a good
file viewer, that does not work off of explorer.

Ooooops. Remove iOS.

The point is simply for both the Windows & Android freeware use model:
1. It's highly efficient to not only _know_ what the best freeware apps are
2. But it's even more efficient to archive them for easy re-installation.

It turns out that archiving freeware for re-use on almost any other system
works great for both Android & Windows, but it's essentially impossible for
iOS (where for Linux, the mechanism is completely different in most cases).

The good news is that for Android & Windows, it's fantastic to both:
a. Know what freeware is the best of the best for any given task, and,
b. To have it already archived for efficient installation on any system!

I pretty much have the best freeware listed for all things I do on both
.. Android, and Windows

For example, I have over 750 Android "best freeware" APKs archived, which I
re-use all the time on other phones (I've re-installed the best freeware on
Android, oh, about a phone a month or so, on average, from these 750
archived freeware APKs).
https://i.postimg.cc/jSzvk2Fy/winsearch03.jpg

I'm still organizing them though, where this screenshot gives you an idea
of how well organized my Windows and Android file systems are, all of which
is the best freeware I can find... with your help!

In summary, for both Android & for Windows, with your help, I have
determined the _best_ possible set of freeware to do all common tasks, such
that I have never needed to purchase software on Android, and only rarely
(e.g., M$ office & Turbotax) have I needed to purchase software on Windows.
