Default Setting up new PC

Thanks to everybody for the advice which is greatly appreciated and
which I have learnt from. I particularly liked Ed Cryer's idea and
intended going along that route. However, in the meantime I have
managed to get my wife's laptop working sufficiently well for the
immediate future. This means that I now have more time to set up the
new laptop and will therefore abandon the idea of imaging and take my
time to install what she needs and to customize it to her taste (W8).
Once again, thank you all very much.

Regards
chris

Good idea.
Just and fyi....the key point everyone directly avoided was the Win10
Licensing constraints.
1. Both Retail and OEM license are single use licenses
2. Your pc/device's Win10 license applies to your and only your machine.
- If a retail license, it can be transferred to another device
provided the device from which it was transferred is no longer in use.
- If an OEM license, the license can not be transferred to another
device regardless of discontinuing use of the original device
3. HP devices are provided, as shipped, with an OEM license.

I think most everyone knows that. The question was
whether there would be any problem transferring an
identical copy, given that the key is in the BIOS. There's
no attempt to reuse 1 license on 2 systems; only to
save time setting up the new machine. Unfortunately,
we won't find out now how it would have panned out.

I have a somewhat related licensing question, particularly because I had a
machine with MS Office & Win10 Pro that recently was bricked by a Microsoft
Update.

Long ago, I wrote on the desktop case, the 25-character Office Pro 2007
license key but I don't have the Office Pro 2007 media (I don't think I
ever had it).

Is this media easy to get?

It might be. Have you tried a Google search for
Office Pro 2007 download ?

Yikes. I hope you learned your lesson from that. Always
make copies of the DVD and put the key on it with
permanent marker.

There are sites like this:

https://softlay.net/microsoft-office...-free-download

I don't know how safe they are.

Microsoft also has a page for downloads, but they seem
to be only offering back to 2010:

https://products.office.com/en/downl...ffice-products

Thanks Mayayana as I figured it out, but it's pretty convoluted, since
multiple Microsoft employees had to get involved to solve the problem.

I'll write up all the steps in a separate thread and post the URL here so
as not to knock this thread off kilter.

I have it installed now - where the procedure turns out to be absolutely
nothing like what you find on the net ... so I'll document every step for
you in a separate thread.

I solved the problem after calling Microsoft at:
a. +1-800-360-7561
b. +1-800-642-7676

But I had two fundamental questions in the writeup for our tribal knowledge
1. Where did the download go (it seems to be gone & the link expired?)
2. Can I give you the full URLs or are they particular to my office key?

I only used Office Pro because when I was doing sub-contracting work
for a building maintenance manager, he insisted that I submit my
quotations using Microsoft Office. That was OK with me; I just added
$50 to each quote to pay for Office. Normally, in that timeframe of
my life, I was using WordPerfect. I quit WP some years ago. Nowadays,
I use SoftMaker Office 2018.

I've been using WordPerfect since I first started with personal
computers--1987. I still prefer and use it, but only WordPerfect
itself, not the rest of the suite. For everything else, I use most of
the components of Microsoft Office--almost everything except Word.

The question was:
"can I simply put an image or clone of mine
onto it and then uninstall/delete any stuff she doesn't want or do I
have to start from scratch"
- By licensing, without any mention of changing product key or removal
from the source - 'can I put' then would be 'no'.

The other issue, is the digital license assigned to the source Win10
device(the one used to create the image/clone)regardless of any firmware
stored product key.
- image/clone to another 'OEM' device may create the more significant
problem reassigning the source hardware footprint of the destination in
the MSFT Store.

Technical ability aside, image/cloning an OEM devices license to
another, even temporarily is probably not a good idea given Windows
proclivity to ensure device activation and its corresponding installed
version license is valid.

The link you posted(elsewhere) to download O2K7 X12-30196.exe, in case
you haven't already download and savedl locally, remains functional.

By default, unless user modified in Win10, the download will be saved in
the users profile 'Downloads' folder.
