Well, they're on-screen buttons. I prefer a physical keyboard as well
but I have to admit that the word suggestions which appear over certain
letters of the on-screen keyboard on the Blackberry Z10 I own make
typing absolute heaven. The iPhone is a nifty little device though.

I probably should not get one though my wife seems to be addicted to hers.

They don't make you any more productive, that's for sure. If you can go
on in life not taking advantage of the latest technology, that's a good
thing. Acquiring the latest technology in order to maintain happiness is
not much different than being addicted to crack.

It's not as bad for your teeth than crack, unless you're so addicted
that you neglect dental hygiene.

Which is not 100% outside the realm of possibility...

It seems to suggest that you have to log in with the original
Administrator account, in other words the first account ever created on
that installation.

OK, I finally got the password for the original administrator account
and was able to download. I also found out that the new accounts I
made/created were still in standard, and not administrator! I had to
edit their types. W8 sure changed on how to make accounts too. Now, I am
currently SLOWLY downloading W8.1 up(grade/date) from MS App Store.

Boo. It failed overnight. I saw it idling at a boot up(?) with
diagnostic stuff.

Usually this happens if the computer goes to sleep during the process
or, even worse, hibernates. I get the impression this might have been
the case.

Hmm, I didn't see it asleep. Anyways, I saw it again when I came back to
check machine! Here is what I saw:

Language selection (picked English) screen.

Choose an option: "Trouble (Refresh or reset your PC, or use advanced
tools)" or "Turn off your PC".

I stopped here to see what you guys will say. I did not boot back to
desktop. Maybe I can get logs from here instead to see what's up?

Wow, no comments? I went to back to its desktop and saw this:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored
your previous versions of Windows to this PC.

"Dood, you got the same code as the guy on Forbes.com" :-)

You're in good company. I wonder if a tech support person from
Microsoft will be contacting you, after reading this thread :-)

http://www.forbes.com/sites/larrymag...on-2-machines/

Someone here, traced the problem to a missing SYSTEM RESERVED partition.
On Windows 8, that would be around 350MB. There is at least one
recipe for removing such, and maybe the upgrader doesn't like that :-(
Further down the page, a person reports updating their SSD firmware
fixed it.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...fe62d9?page=45

And there are only 602 replies in that thread. Talk about "telemetry".

It seems there's no end to proposed solutions. Everyone thinks
they've got the answer.

I would start with a .log file if you can find one. Someone mentioned
a "Panther" directory, but I don't know if it's there or not. When
**** like this happens, I usually do a search on "ext:log", then
sort by date, and see which log(s) were last created. The logs
are totally useless, but they're a "breadcrumb when nobody seems to care".

Mountain Dew is almost as bad, and in some areas* is even more widely
available.

*Outside of Missouri and Arkansas, for example, the crack capital of the
nation.

Reading those answers.microsoft.com threads shows much variation in the
systems attempting the upgrade some quite old, other unclear on what
software is installed, whether or not 8.1 requirements are met, presence
of 3rd party AV, etc.
- is it any wonder that multiple solutions are being thrown out and
unless I missed it, I don't see any recommendation 'marked as an answer'

With respect to the System Reserved (350 MB) partition. It does contain
the contents or link to OEM recovery partitions. When upgrading to 8.1
the refresh/reset bits are not updated to 8.1...they continue to provide
going back to 8.0 (remember 8.1 is an upgrade not a new o/s). If the SR
is corrupt or missing for some reason then it would seem plausible that
8.1 would fail if it needs to validate the ability to refresh/reset
during the upgrade process.

Either way...it's still messy with different causes for different
systems when the upgrade fails.
