Ripping A DVD On Surface Pro?

Has anybody done DVD ripping on a Surface Pro or like-powered machine?

Using an external drive, of course...

I'm wondering how long it would take compared to my desktop PC, which
can rip a DVD in under 20 minutes - sometimes well under.... Or my
Atom-powered netbook, which takes more like 45 minutes for the same
task.

a newer drive should be able to rip a DVD using DVD decrypter in
10-12 minutes. My ASUS reader will hit about 11x-12x on a DL disc,
and be done with it in about that time."

That suggests the optical drive is a potential limiting factor. I
have one optical drive here which is rip-locked. I have another
which works OK.

I would think a Surface Pro would be pretty powerful, CPU wise,
compared to an Atom. Just make sure you're using a decent optical
drive.

I would agree with the drive being important.

When I change between my VAIO laptop's internal drive and a "real" (as
in Samsung SH222 or SH223) the ripping time gets cut roughly in half.

As a user of many netbooks and tablets, I don't see anyway you'll be
able to rip them in 20 minutes or less on a Surface Pro. Does it even
have USB3? Or is it stuck at v2?

It comes with one USB port. USB 3, as it happens.

USB2 compatible.

Well I don't have anything with USB3 yet, but with USB2, no way. I still
wouldn't place any bets with USB3 ripping at 20 minutes or better. But
if it could, I would be totally surprised.

Depends on the ripping software, I think. AIUI, it must decode the
data on the DVD and convert it to the format you specify. That could
take some time, so CPU speed and threading efficiency would be the
constraints. Am I right?

I too would think so. Although Paul sounds right on track if the device
was connected to the internal buss like drives and optical drivers are
normally. Although the Surface has no such option and you can only
connect up externally through USB. Through a dang serial USB port no
less. No, I don't see it ever happening ripping in 20 minutes.

USB = Universal Serial Bus.

They're all serial, and 2 & 3 are pretty fast.

As for what will work for an external drive:

The maximum speeds are 480 Mb/s for USB2 and 10x that, 4.8 Gb/s, for
USB3. See http://www.diffen.com/difference/USB_2.0_vs_USB_3.0.

And according to http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/#bluray_speed,

"According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as
36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer
rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps)."

USB2 should be OK for playing Blu-ray, and should be fine for reading
and writing up to 6x or 8x, since reaching 12x (close to 480 Mb/s)
might not happen consistently in the real world.
