Finding a new PC on which Windows 7 can be installed.
Wanting to replace my 8-year-old desktop with one that also has W7
installed, but difficult to find. The UK PC supplier from whom I bought the current one has replied: "No modern CPUs support anything other than windows 10 and, thus, you will find a huge range of either glitches, crashes or simple failures to install the OS. Your best option would be to maybe save money and go through a third party for a cheap windows 10 key. Unfortunately no new, modern system would work on windows 7; regardless of manufacturer." Anyone in UK know of availability of a 'modern' PC that has (or can have) W7 installed? -- /\/\aurice (Replace "nomail.afraid" by "bcs" to reply by email) |

Anyone in UK know of availability of a 'modern' PC that has (or can have) W7 installed? Do you mind mail order? And can you do mail order from places like NewEgg? And what do you want? PC desktop or laptop? I've seen referbs on Newegg that are Win7. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-308-_-Product Not that this is the best PC, but when I filtered for operating system I saw 999+ on the filter. Granted this is loaded with win 10 but says it will downgrade. Not sure how well that stuff works. |

Better than buying a motherboard and cpu and memory for my old P4 Pentium box. :-) |

| "No modern CPUs support anything other than windows 10 Presumably by "modern" they mean the new type like AMD Ryzen. I don't know anything about those, but why not just buy the parts and make a box with anything older, assuming you have or can get a Win7 disk. That's really two different issues: Getting Win7 to install vs getting a Win7 computer. I currently have XP and Win7 both installed on boxes with an Asus M5A78L-M board and AMD FX-8300 8-core, 3.3GHz CPU. I'm very happy with the combination. I saw the boards on sale last week for about $60 US. I'm thinking of buying some backup boards, in case the Win7 box ever dies, so that I can re-install and still activate it. That's just one example. There's no need to buy the very latest. Supporting hardware is still current. Getting a board, DVD drive, CPU, RAM, case and power supply should cost well under $500 US, as cheap as the cheapest new PCs. Putting it all together is really not very involved. The trick is just to be gentle and avoid static electricity. If you don't want to deal with that you might try Dell. Last I saw they were still selling Win7 PCs. Also, Win10 Pro allows for "downgrade" rights if you get a compatible computer. Though it would be a shame to pay for a pro version of slop that you don't even want. If you decide to try installing 7 on a "modern" system you might look at things like this: https://www.anandtech.com/show/11182...-windows-7-x64 Apparently it's possible but a hassle. I'm guessing Paul might stop by soon to explain that better. |

Anyone in UK know of availability of a 'modern' PC that has (or can have) W7 installed? I'm in the USA, and don't know anything about what's available in the UK, but I do know that the statements "No modern CPUs support anything other than windows 10 and, thus, you will find a huge range of either glitches, crashes or simple failures to install the OS" and "Unfortunately no new, modern system would work on windows 7; regardless of manufacturer" are completely false. As a single example, you can get them from Dell. See http://pilot.search.dell.com/windows%207 However, I would personally recommend against going with such an old unsupported version of Windows. I recommend that if you buy a new computer, you get Windows 10, but do not buy it from that UK PC supplier since they either lie to you or don't know what they are talking about. They sound like a good company to stay far away from. |

You'll have full warranty and an up todate system, And when you learn to use and Optimize it You will be happy for a long term, Win 7 is OK but outdated Rene |

Try Novatech: https://www.novatech.co.uk/pc/home/ They have got laptops as well as Desktops and they also sell bare-bone bundles. Their machines can come with or without operating system. I have got quite a few from them but as you may know I use Windows 10 but they also supplied me with Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 drivers just in case I decided to duel boot my machines. i didn't any of them as Windows 10 is just right for me. Anyone in UK know of availability of a 'modern' PC that has (or can have) W7 installed? Microsoft blocks Windows Update for certain processors. Someone has a hack for that, to enable it again. The Windows 7 DVD doesn't have an XHCI driver, so using a portable optical drive on a USB3 port might not work. The chipset might not have Windows 7 drivers. For example, the newest motherboard uses LGA1151 but with Z370 chipset (the older LGA1151 boards don't support the newest processor). So let's work an example. Try and force Windows 7 on newest kit. It's the Win8 users who are screwed :-) https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards...Desk_Download/ Win10 drivers VGA === CPU graphics (GPU inside) Audio LAN Chipset === labels Device Manager properly SATA (Intel RST) Win8 drivers crickets Win7 drivers Audio LAN Without any USB3 drivers listed for the motherboard on Win7, you would have to wonder what will work on there. It means seeing if the board has an add-on (Asmedia) USB3 chip or not, which is bound to have USB3. It means doing extra research. ******* The poster "Nil" recently bought a motherboard and processor. I believe he got a "Skylake" processor. There are still some around. Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake are probably a bit too modern for their own good. You can use a tool like this, to work backwards. Given a CPU, find a motherboard. https://www.asus.com/us/support/cpu_support Walk down the cpu-world page (must verify these before acting on the info). http://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Soc...4_LGA1151.html Look one up on Newegg. Asian seller. "Intel Core i7-6700K 4C 8T Processor 4GHz 8MB Cache LGA1151" $373 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...9SIA1K657Z8726 Check on ark.intel.com https://ark.intel.com/products/88195...up-to-4_20-GHz Product Collection 6th Generation Intel Core i7 Processors Code Name Products formerly Skylake === Vertical Segment Desktop Processor Number i7-6700K Status Launched Launch Date Fall 2015 Lithography 14 nm Recommended Customer Price $339.00 - $350.00 TDP 91W Using the Asus page, and entering "i7-6700K", I get a representative answer. PRIME Z270-A Make up a URL by editing my previous URL... A pretty full driver set. https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards...Desk_Download/ Win7 drivers VGA Audio LAN USB (one driver for Asmedia USB3) Chipset SATA (Intel RST) That's the basic idea, for a Skylake hunt. And now that you know a Z270 would work, you could go looking for the equivalent kind of page on the Gigabyte site. https://www.gigabyte.com/Support/CPU-Support Plug in "Intel Core i7" and "Core i7-6700K" https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard...70X-UD3-rev-10 And so on. Finding a new PC on which Windows 7 can be installed.
W10 is crap any way you look at it.
My Win10 laptop is the biggest pain to use. Never ready when i am. supper sluggish on all fronts. Seems to update and hold me up several times a wwek. Apps I use keep going to "NOT RESPONDING" Or i get the green progress bar of slow death that never seems to quit. My Win XP is brilliant. I have four and they just keep going. My Win 7 pc is OK. I have three and they have a few OS problems but nothing major. I buy refib laptops, two lenovos so far, and both are flawless. Remember, even refirbs can be fixed, upgraded etc. Change out for a SSD, easy. Add more RAM, easy. yeah spend more money but get exactly what you want. |
