creating shortcut keys for a desktop shortcut
I am trying to create shortcut keys for a shortcut and I am not able to type over the word "none" in the shortcut key box. This is on Windows XP. (I'm trying to create a shortcut to a shutdown.bat file I've created because sometimes my laptop screen goes blank and the only way to get it back is to restart, but I can't see to make it restart, hence the need for shortcut keys to execute a shutdown). Thanks in advance. -- annroberti ------------------------------------------------------------------------ annroberti's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/annroberti.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/customize-xp/1099253.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Try just creating a new shortcut, and in "location" type: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00 Then try assigning a shortcut key in the Properties of it. Does it let you do that? For the problem at hand, would a reboot command not be more useful than a shutdown? If so, replace the "-s" in the above with "-r". You might also want to try addressing the root issue of your screen going blank - I know I would... |

No matter how I make a shortcut, including typing %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe etc in the location, I cannot type over the "none" in the shortcut keys box. That is the problem. I have tried to find out why the screen goes blank to no avail -- it is just a windows/laptop instability, I think. As for ctl alt del and task manager, Task manager comes up in applications or process window and hitting tab will just take me through end task, switch to and end process. Shut down in not available through anything but the mouse, and since I can't see where the mouse is or where task manager is, I can't use that. -- annroberti ------------------------------------------------------------------------ annroberti's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/annroberti.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/customize-xp/1099253.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Well when I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del I get a logof window with 6 buttons where the third is shutdown. But then again I also use logon screen with password. But I think I have heard that if You hit Ctrl+Alt+Del twise You should get the shot down dialog. Kind regards Asger |

I cant put in anything -- I cant type over the word None. CTL ALT DEL twice doesnt do anything. -- annroberti ------------------------------------------------------------------------ annroberti's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/annroberti.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/customize-xp/1099253.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Then WinXP automatically fills in the textbox with "Ctrl + Alt + key." I don't think you can make shortcuts without having that Ctrl + Alt part in there, but maybe the AutoHotKey program available at http://www.autohotkey.com/ might let you overcome this apparent limitation of WinXP. One other suggestion: Try doing Alt + F4 followed by Alt + U from the desktop. This is what I use to shut down my computer most of the time. |
