Windows 8 now Official, thoughts?

I just went to Best Buy to take a look at the official release of Windows 8.
Official meaning this isn't a beta or a test version but the real deal.

These are my thoughts.

I HATE IT! No start button, no start menus created and maintained by me to
accommodate my program needs (I have on the initial start, an Office 2000
folder, and in programs a multimedia folder with audio, video, encoder
folders) and NO SALE!

I know there's a classic UI but until I see one from Microsoft I will scour
the electronics stores in search of a Windows 7. I won't jailbreak my iPhone
and I won't do the equivalent with Windows. Either that or I may need to go
Apple.

So for those of you who have been to the stores and seen the real deal in
person what do you think?

Classic Shell fixes those for people who prefer the old start menu.

Or you could RTFM and learn to use it as is.

But...to do any of the above...it would require installation.

As far as installation...only Windows 7 can be upgraded to retain programs. XP and Vista upgrades are clean installs.

You don't need a start button. Just hit the Windows key, and start typing
the name of a program, hit enter to start it. The programs you use the most
will apear first in the list of matching programs. You should be doing this
in Windows 7 allready. Using the mouse to start a program is not very
efficient.

If you must use a mouse, the start screen is just like a start menu, except
it fills the whole screen. You can customize which programs appear on the
start screen, and in what order.

If you must have a start button, you can use start8 or Classic Shell.

I've been running the RTM since day one. Classic Shell works fine if
you want the "start" orb back.

Give it more than one day before you decide it's not working for you.
There are quite a few ways to customize the end-user shell. Even
working in Metro, it's not all that bad - just different.

I've been running the RTM version for a while now on a PC here at work,
and I'm not a fan of The Interface Formerly Known As Metro (TIFKAM) on
a desktop machine. I'll have a Surface RT in my hands later today to
try it on a tablet, so we'll see how that goes.

But, on the desktop, you don't have to stay in TIFKAM if you don't want
to, and it doesn't take the equivalent of "jailbreaking". Just install
a program called Classic Shell (or one of a few others that I can't be
bothered to look up for you). That's not jailbreaking, it's loading
new software that does something you want.

But to each his own - if you don't want to run Windows 8, you don't
have to. Good luck finding PCs sold at retail running Windows 7 here
in a few months, though. I hope you like Apples...

Yes, you don't *need* a Start button. But as far as I'm concerned,
having one makes it much easier to use

Again, "must have" are words that are too strong. But I use Classic
Shell, and it makes things much easier for me. And there's no downside
to using it, as far as I know.

Your choice, of course. And your view is not very different from mine.

Nevertheless, what we prefer and whether we would choose to use
Windows 8 without a start menu has nothing to do with need. We do not
*need* a Start button and we could use Windows 8 without it--perhaps
not as gracefully, but we could use it.

habit of pressing it when I want to see the start menu. It's easier
than using the mouse.

To me, which is easier depends on where your hands happen to be at the
moment. If my hand is already on the mouse, I find using it is much
easier than pressing a key.

And in Windows 8, the Windows key is different from what it does is
prior versions.

Having used Windows since Win95 and the Quick Launch taskbar and later o/s with both the Quick Launch and Windows Taskbar I rarely
used the Windows key to popup the Start Menu to navigate and find something.

The primary use of the Start Menu was either to access the Search or the Run command (both easily available from the Win8 Start
Screen). Much of that has to do with a good memory for just about every program's name or shortcut (e.g. diskmgmt.msc,
eventvwr.msc, appwiz.cpl etc.)
