My understanding is that the Windows Media Player is no longer included
in WIN 8 and is an extra cost option. What player (free) is recommended for WMV files in Win 8? |

Windows Media Player *is* included. What you are thinking of is Windows Media Center. As usual, Microsoft has worked hard to confuse people by using very similar names for two very different things.
