I wonder if this could be fixed with sfc /scannow which links items from WinSXS back into System32 ? It would really depend on how the OP removed iexplore.exe as to whether this is the right course of action. Internet Explorer consists of two parts. The "iexplore.exe" is the visible, interactive part. The "mshtml.dll" part helps with the rendering that portions of the OS might happen to need. In cases where something in the OS is encoded using HTML/JS, it's files like mshtml.dll that help with that. When for EU compliance, iexplore.exe is removed, the mshtml.dll portion is supposed to stay put, as it's the part which is considered "part of the OS". The iexplore.exe is merely the icing on the cake, and not the whole cake. In any case, the available IE11 versions, even the Cumulative Security Update for IE11 of Jan.7,2018, there's none for specifically Windows 10. And unless the installer is encoded specifically for Windows 10, the version number on the Win8 one is too old and crusty to work on Windows 10. I don't see a means of escape that way. And if you grab a 500MB general purpose Cumulative for Windows 10, that would be hopelessly mis-aligned with the current WinSXS servicing state. That leaves dism ... restorehealth ; A method that repopulates WinSXS, if you delete from there ; Deleting from Program Files doesn't hurt that area. ; This is unlikely to be necessary, unless you're a mercenary :-) ; (Paid to break stuff...) sfc /scannow ; A method for linking WinSXS files into System32 or ; Program Files or whatever. The command uses web reference ; material in some cases, so the user doesn't have to craft ; additional parameters. In other cases, the user is responsible ; for snagging materials off a DVD for usage with it. This would ; be my #1 step, unless other details of the adventure emerge. System Restore ; to a time before the damage... Windows 10 frequently ; has System Restore turned off, so the odds of this even ; being available are poor at best. Third party back/restore ; Use a backup you made, before the incident. HTH, Paul |

You probably haven't actually deleted all the materials to do this from your hard drive. I checked, and practically all the files in these two Program Files folders, are available in WinSXS. I used "md5sum" hash calcs to identify files likely to be the same. While Sysinternals uses "findlinks" for this, I did it the "hard way". IE11 exists as both a 32 bit and a 64 bit version (on a 64 bit OS installation). IE11 would only exist as a 32 bit version on a 32 bit OS, cutting the number of files roughly in half here. When you delete the contents of Program Files (x86) and Program Files, there can be file pointers in WinSXS which result in no loss of data clusters. sfc /scannow may put the files back, by doing the hard-linking for you. (DISM restorehealth type commands would repair WinSXS if it was damaged.) I suppose what the tools will do, depends on whether the OS "thinks" the package is actually uninstalled and Programs and Features agrees. You would think if the WinSXS files were present, then the Programs and Features would have a tick box to repair the Windows Feature. 3072,db1ca35ef1073318244a3414e955fb84,C:\Windows\W inSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-i..otmailapi.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.16299 .15_en-us_c82a5d8ab9ee6e6c\hmmapi.dll.mui 2560,4463ad0410e861f383c6f7c9fd663da4,C:\Windows\W inSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-ieinstal.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.15_ en-us_acda3100e6e8cc1d\ieinstal.exe.mui 5632,b9603cf4417cdc08ecde2fe5ee80f14e,C:\Windows\W inSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-i..-optional.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.15_ en-us_e940989bc17159bc\iexplore.exe.mui 54272,27322d4afb4f47cdcc1fde6d43f36db2,C:\Windows\ WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-ie-impexp-extexport_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_7f0 97e8157ed9c93\ExtExport.exe 53760,2ffad98204f203e08486dd09c1a27253,C:\Windows\ WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-ie-hotmailapi_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.16299.15_none_8d3 80845b611f007\hmmapi.dll 5430,14532f2c3b9ef902a712150efdc3d7cd,C:\Windows\W inSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-ie-internetexplorer_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_n one_806dbde9ae66870e\bing.ico 222720,c96a7b7fdb8a5d7eabc8936cdb0a9001,C:\Windows \WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-ie-ielowutil_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_578 1ca0705a2c070\ielowutil.exe 512000,9bba335075836d8a93755e81a3557fd9,C:\Windows \WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-ie-iediag_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.15_none_6dbdd3c 76d4fb727\iediagcmd.exe 501760,7111027a9bd286a0e634c5e83a2fba67,C:\Windows \WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-ieinstal_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_39a7 96ff260a63c6\ieinstal.exe 402432,fa1bc6a7cb0b943b2394e31fd917b452,C:\Windows \WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-ie-ieshims_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_9898e dd62ea10918\IEShims.dll 49688,9b06db0952f3768757ce665a623b8dfe,C:\Windows\ WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-i..p-ie-sqmapi-windows_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.16299.15_none_2d4144 b730d7d918\sqmapi.dll 824632,fbe82a489d5fe5a4e66b6a5b544499d0,C:\Windows \WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-i..etexplorer-optional_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_e9c2 1a3a422dce19\iexplore.exe 2963,14ea28e48740cb4db9c233347c76a79a,C:\Windows\W inSxS\wow64_microsoft-windows-ieframe_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_c002d 4d276e7d189\ie9props.propdesc 45568,e285a331f671177dd33f18b783ae604d,C:\Windows\ WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-ie-impexp-extexport_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_22e ae2fd9f902b5d\ExtExport.exe 50688,eaec3cf98b5d8db64f8366df00d7d041,C:\Windows\ WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-ie-hotmailapi_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.16299.15_none_311 96cc1fdb47ed1\hmmapi.dll 221184,4b26d242a6bb1bac48e4f4d855309f03,C:\Windows \WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-ie-ielowutil_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_fb6 32e834d454f3a\ielowutil.exe 334848,7d8bca917021f2aa94d6295176ddd702,C:\Windows \WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-ie-ieshims_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_3c7a5 252764397e2\IEShims.dll 42960,bd43c7a87ff390bf3807b0b15b943d7a,C:\Windows\ WinSxS\wow64_microsoft-windows-i..p-ie-sqmapi-windows_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.16299.15_none_3795ef 0965389b13\sqmapi.dll 482304,b0405ccd020b3a392df23cef76050357,C:\Windows \WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-ieinstal_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_dd88 fb7b6dacf290\ieinstal.exe 822584,58083f7faa11c18a4b5d160aee6b977b,C:\Windows \WinSxS\wow64_microsoft-windows-i..etexplorer-optional_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.16299.192_none_f416 c48c768e9014\iexplore.exe The one that is missing is install.ins. This utility lightly touches on the topic of hardlinks, but doesn't form them. This would show how two file pointers are linked to the same set of data clusters, using info in the $MFT. I used hashdeep to compute MD5 hashes, compare them and make a best guess about what file was used. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...oads/findlinks This is an example of the hashdeep stuff. Use "-j 1" if scanning a hard drive with this stuff. If you have an SSD you can try more parallelism and beat the **** out of the SSD via "-j 4". The downside of using parallelism, is the files aren't put in order properly. https://github-production-release-as...2Foctet-stream hashdeep64.exe -c MD5 -r -j 1 C:\ L:\C_md5.txt My info was pulled from a system patched to 16299.214. It doesn't look like .214 applied anything affecting IE11, which is why the latest file stamps used are .192 instead. You can see examples of using "mklink" or similar here. However, what this doesn't solve, is "what should the permissions on the files be". https://superuser.com/questions/2557...s-in-windows-7 So let's just hope "sfc /scannow" can fix this instead. Sure you can mklink your way to glory, and we have half a clue that TrustedInstaller owns the files sitting in the Program Files folder, but you're unlikely to get every detail right by "guessing". You can look at other Microsoft utility folders to get a feel for what the permissions should look like. That's why in the SuperUser thread, there's mention of "it failed". You would need to impersonate the correct account, to do this directly with mklink. I could probably smash it with "psexec -msi cmd.exe" and while running as the SYSTEM account in there, do the mklink commands. But that still would not leave the folder in the "perfectly maintainable" state it was in originally. Everything must be "just so", so that when the next Patch Tuesday comes along, the version of IE11 in Program Files gets changed without any bitter complaints from the MS installer. That's why we have to be careful with this crap. Imagine a Windows Update sitting in a huff, spinning in circles and downloading the same update over and over again. We don't want that now, do we :-) Have fun with your sfc /scannow invocation, Paul |

A further snag on using Edge is my shorcuts on the desktop, produced by dragging the address from 1e11 onto the desktop, No longer work as the properties show them as .website files. Another problem is clicking on a link in an outlook emaill which previously opened the link but now produces an error box "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer ....."
