Default Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data

Ok here is the problem I use my fax to both send and
receive sucessfully I have been using XP fax for the last
six months. since I did a clean install a few weeks ago
however The Fax monitor shows absolutely nothing in the
way of activity. it opens up it gives me the options to
answer now or hide etc. but shows nothing if you extend
the display window. I have double checked all of my
settings I have it set to open automatically when sending
and receiving yet it does not open if a fax is being sent
or received. (this can be quite a hassle)it will only
open manually yet it answers a Fax whether it has been
opened or not (set to do so automatically because without
the monitor responding I have no way to manually receive
it conviently before my message bank kicks in)There is
the problem I have to disable it otherwise it interupts
my phone calls. and if it does that i then have to hang
up and call them back. If the fax monitor does not open
and does not respond to the activity I am unable to
disconnect it. nothing appears in the task bar either
though it should.
The Fax itself works I can both send and receive
successfully however when receiving it does not hang up
once the transmittal has completed it simply continues to
clock over the duration of the connection in the top
section and nothing at all appearing in the lower
section. I only know what is going on by checking the
actual fax console.

I have removed then reconfigure the fax the modem the
lot....What more can I do I seriously need this thing
working?

Default Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data

A number of standard update and repair procedures disabled the Fax Monitor
in the initial release of Windows XP. These problems were fixed in Service
Pack 1. Make sure you apply SP1 if you notice this problem.

Default Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data

List steps to reproduce......?

I don't have to DO anything to reproduce it is each and
every time I send or receive a fax, notification fails to
happen the fax monitor fails to respond or acknowledge
activity. the Fax monitor simply does not respond or
notify ANY activity in relation to sending or receiving
fax. I have double checked settings everything is set to
notify however no notification is given either by way of
task bar or fax monitor when sending or receiving a fax.
Modem responds, fax console receives the fax or sends the
fax and responds accordingly the problem is no
notification taking place. The fax monitor is also set to
open when sending or receiveing a fax yet fails to do so
the fax monitor will only open manually. and when it does
so it does not display any current activity.....simply
has the answer now button even if the modem is in fact
sending or receiving a fax at that moment. Also when
receiving a fax the program does not disconnect once the
transmittal has completed it simply continues clocking
over the connection time with the modem active on the
phone line. When a fax has completed sending it does
actually disengage the line once completed this
connection issue is only in regards to receiving.

The problem with the notification happens each and every
time a fax is sent or received! it makes no difference
which program I send a fax from it makes no difference
who or which fax machine I receive a fax from.

Default Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data

What changed was I reformatted my HDD a couple of times
and reinstalled XP I had to reinstall from a new disc as
my children destroyed the other one the new disc was
purchased. it is effectively a new computer. the rest of
the software I am using on my computer now compared to
then is all the same isn't any logical reason it isn't
working. with this install I have had problems with my
email clients as well it seemed about two weeks after I
reinstalled most registry keys for both outlook express
and incredimail vanished under the email heading this has
since been fixed by reinstalling incredimail however
outlook still does not seem to have regained them since
removing and adding it via windows componants. it is
recognised as a newsreader but not as an email program.
(since I do not use outlook for email it isn't a great
concern and incredimail has been repaired) This is the
only anomaly to appear since the new installation.
However the Fax monitor has not been working at all since
I did a clean install of XP.

Default Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data

Oh, ick. No wonder. That's why the steps to repro are so important. Next
time do your Norton Security last. It should never be running when you're
installing updates and core software.
There's no telling what might have gone awry. I'll post the reg patches that
fixed this problem before SP1 was released so you can try them. I'm not sure
you ever got a complete installation of SP1.

Certain registry keys on which Fax depends can be wiped out by certain
update or repair operations in
XP. Try the following:

1. Save the attachment to this post (or paste the text between dashed lines
at the bottom of this message into Notepad and save it).

2. Rename it RPCProt.reg

3. Go to Windows Explorer and double-click on RPCProt.reg - this would apply
the key to the registry (assuming that Merge is the default action).

3a. If double clicking the RENAMED file opens Notepad or WordPad, go to
'Start|Run', type REGEDIT, click OK, then go to 'File|Import' and navigate
to the file.

4. Stop and then restart the fax service.

The contents of the attached file:
--------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientPr otocols]
"ncacn_np"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncacn_ip_tcp"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncadg_ip_udp"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncacn_http"="rpcrt4.dll"

has
since been fixed by reinstalling incredimail however
outlook still does not seem to have regained them since
removing and adding it via windows componants. it is
recognised as a newsreader but not as an email program.

of
the software I am using on my computer now compared to
then is all the same isn't any logical reason it isn't
working. with this install I have had problems with my
email clients as well it seemed about two weeks after I
reinstalled most registry keys for both outlook express
and incredimail vanished under the email heading this
has
since been fixed by reinstalling incredimail however
outlook still does not seem to have regained them since
removing and adding it via windows componants. it is
recognised as a newsreader but not as an email program.
(since I do not use outlook for email it isn't a great
concern and incredimail has been repaired) This is the
only anomaly to appear since the new installation.
However the Fax monitor has not been working at all
since
I did a clean install of XP.

notify ANY activity in relation to sending or

set
to
notify however no notification is given either by
way
of
task bar or fax monitor when sending or receiving a

Modem responds, fax console receives the fax or
sends
the
fax and responds accordingly the problem is no
notification taking place. The fax monitor is also
set
to
open when sending or receiveing a fax yet fails to
do
so
the fax monitor will only open manually. and when it
does
so it does not display any current
activity.....simply
has the answer now button even if the modem is in
fact
sending or receiving a fax at that moment. Also when
receiving a fax the program does not disconnect once
the
transmittal has completed it simply continues
clocking
over the connection time with the modem active on
the
phone line. When a fax has completed sending it does
actually disengage the line once completed this
connection issue is only in regards to receiving.

The problem with the notification happens each and

Russ as I mentioned earlier SP1 was included in the disc I have which

Oh, ick. No wonder. That's why the steps to repro are so important.

Next
time do your Norton Security last. It should never be running when

you're
installing updates and core software.
There's no telling what might have gone awry. I'll post the reg

patches
that
fixed this problem before SP1 was released so you can try them. I'm

not
sure
you ever got a complete installation of SP1.

Certain registry keys on which Fax depends can be wiped out by certain
update or repair operations in
XP. Try the following:

1. Save the attachment to this post (or paste the text between dashed

lines
at the bottom of this message into Notepad and save it).

2. Rename it RPCProt.reg

3. Go to Windows Explorer and double-click on RPCProt.reg - this would

apply
the key to the registry (assuming that Merge is the default action).

3a. If double clicking the RENAMED file opens Notepad or WordPad, go

to
'Start|Run', type REGEDIT, click OK, then go to 'File|Import' and

navigate
to the file.

4. Stop and then restart the fax service.

The contents of the attached file:
--------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientPr otocols]
"ncacn_np"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncacn_ip_tcp"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncadg_ip_udp"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncacn_http"="rpcrt4.dll"

I don't understand. The Fax Service is not installed by default with the OS.
It must be installed expressly from Control Panel Add/Remove.
