Default Ubuntu 10.04 to Include Beginner's Manual

Better yet, I have all of their software and Windows set up to just
automatically download and install updates at night, so all they do is
reboot each morning. That takes care of system updates, anti-virus,
etc.

For the Vista users, I even told them which sidebar gadget to use for
a big green restart button; no start menu action needed.

If they're interested in a new program, I download/install it first on
my test machine, *before* they do, and that has prevented many extras,
like toolbars and malware, because I could tell them step-by-step what
to click while installing, or tell them not to use it at all.

So then what is the difference in telling them step-by-step how to install
s/w under *any* OS ? Not having to worry about browse-by malware and trojan
installs is nearly worth the price of admission alone, especially since it
seems like some people are for some reason or another, it is drawn to them.

So far, Windows7 looks much better than Ubuntu, even without a
sidebar.

That's because Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop. I'd recommend trying out the
Kubuntu distro, as the latest version of KDE is vastly superior to the
earlier versions. Looks can be changed too, easily in Linux, easier than
under Windows.

The main difference is familiarity. It's far easier to simply specify
how many click-throughs until they get to the browser toolbar they have
to untick, and the place to choose the shortcuts they prefer. Most of
the the programs they install are games, anyway.

Besides, I'm dealing with people using the internet for email and
entertainment, not using the computer itself for actual work. They don't
need Office when Notepad is enough for recipes and lists. If the OEM
includes MS Works, that's ok, too. None of them have a use for
accounting software, so a freeware checkbook program is plenty.

Vista sidebars are mostly populated by the default clocks and weather
apps, a combined shutdown/restart button app, and sometimes the default
sticky notes. This was a big challenge for those that needed to replace
their Win98/Win98SE or XP machines. Most of them are still very much
resistant to change.

True example: while on the phone with my aunt one day, I heard my uncle
swearing in the background. He wanted to balance his paper checkbook but
the calculator needed new batteries and they were out. Instead of
driving to the store, I told them which keyboard hotkey opened the
calculator. I still haven't convinced him that a checkbook program is
easier than paper, but at least they don't need a calculator now.

You must be talking to your own image in the mirror.
It's obvious that you don't know what a rhetorical question is.

It is obvious that you don't understand what was posted and your
struggles with reading comprehension are obvious.

Amazing, you educate someone on usenet and it turns out that
he/she/it is a psychopath that starts cyber stalking you, with all
those unusual nyms that come out of the woodwork all posting the same
drivel over and over.
You find it hard to believe that more than one person responds to you
?
This isn't a 300 baud BBS with 10 users dipsh*t. I am as far from a
sockpuppet as can be. I've been using the same posting name, and only
the one posting name since 2001, except when some slug loser like you
was inpersonating many different people in a different group, and even
then I only added 'TheReal' to it, which was promptly impersonated
again.
I feel sorry for you, you aren't very logical...or intelligent for
that matter, and are paranoid as well.

You're just making stuff up in your head to explain things you don't
comrehend.

Ubuntu?

My favorite KF of the year, so far.

Who IS Ubuntu anyway?!?

It's not a person. If you really want to know what it means, educate
yourself he Friends don't let friends use Ubuntu

Sounds like a Nigerian money scam!

LOLOL!!!

****ing bigot.

Nevermind. I don't really wanna know!

The majority of people who try Ubuntu remove it off their computers
within hours or a few days.

Perhaps on the planet you inhabit but not on planet earth.
