Hi, pjp.

WHICH weather gadget? There are at least dozens out there, maybe hundreds
or thousands.

And WHICH Windows? Yes, I know this NG is for Win7, but there are plenty of
posts here about WinXP/Win8... and even the not-yet-released Win10.

And, which location - which weather website are you using, or trying to use?
Where (in the world) are you?

My weather service - not a gadget at all, but the app built into Win8.1
Pro - is working fine for our local weather here in Central Texas, and for a
couple of other locations, including Manila, PI.

MS killed the gadgets. Insecure.

MS stopped supporting & recommending gadgets. Mine still work fine
without their help.

The same thing happened to me. First it give a 12 hours or so ago and if
you get rid of it and then bring it back, it cannot connect.

The "built-in" weather gadget came with Windows 7 set to Elmsdale, Nova
Scotia.

Has worked fine for a long time now. Last couple of days though it's
been saying "Forecasted 'x' days ago" and not showing current temp or
conditions.

When I clicked on the link "Elmsdale" it came up with a web page for
another relatively close place instead. If I try resetting location I
get an "not found" message, same happens when I try setting it to a
close and much larger center. Even Halifax, Nova Scotia isn't "found"!

Has server simply been disconnected without notice?

Try and locate a weather gadget that is being supported by a Canadian
software company. Reason I say that is that I was told that the
Canadian Weather Service changed the output format of the weather info
they provide. This broke many weather gadgets if you try to display
info for a Canadian source. What I don't know is how long ago they
changed the data output on the Canadian servers.

Like you say, it's possible that server is down for maintenance or
forever. With out the source code of the gadget it's anyone's guess.

As a test, try picking Boston with your current program and I expect it
will start working just fine, provided you want Boston weather info, as
that should direct the program to get the data from a USA weather server.

Same here. Worked fine until about January 30 and then stopped
updating. Everything I found on the internet about MS disabling
gadgets was dated back to 2013 at the latest, so I don't buy that
explanation.

Tried putting different cities for location and all come back
"Location not found."

Not a big deal if I can't use it any longer but it would be nice to
know why it's stopped working.

Never liked those gadgets. Much prefer the weather app on the phone,
the link on my home page or the 8.1 app.

or
try to find one you like:

Do any of the Win 7 gadgets work on a Win 8.1 desktop?

Mine did the same thing. Fixed it using the following Methodalthough
the settings file was identical in my case your mileage may vary:
quoted from web site:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...9-5677c9b99a7a

So that brings me to what I did to fix it :-) So the renaming of the
cache folder idea (which did not work) seemed like an idea I could
expand upon. I tried a few different things and finally found the
right combination of steps:

A) Copy the following files and folder from a Windows 7 machine with a
working stock weather gadget to a flash drive or network file sha

1. %localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows
live\services\cache\config.xml (just copy the file)

2. %localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows
sidebar\cache\168522d5-1082-4df2-b2f6-9185c31f9472 (copy entire folder
which should contain one or more xml files)

3. %localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows
sidebar\settings.ini (just copy the file)

B) Paste (OVERWRITING if necessary) the copied folder and files into
the same locations on the machine whose stock weather gadget is not
working.

C) Drag the weather gadget back out and this time it should be working

*** As I mentioned earlier, this issue effects both the weather and
currency gadgets. I did not, however, attempt to fix the currency
gadget. I would surmise that you would follow my same process above
but also copy a second folder besides the one listed above (this time
you would grab the one for the currency gadget) under
%localappdata%\affected user\local\microsoft\windows\windows
sidebar\cache. You would then paste the folder (overwriting if
necessary) in the same location on the effected machine

MS didn't kill them. They just advised against using them. My stock Win 7
weather gadgets still work just fine.

When I was writing my post at the same time as you were writing yours, I
couldn't remember a certain word. Somehow your post reminded me.

Microsoft *deprecated* gadgets :-)

Some people have posted that they hate that word...

I never liked the built-in weather gadget and installed this in late 2009.
