The latest facts are, I fear, no more likely to shut him up. Which Win10 malware was included in a Security Fix? - you really should check your memory or sources before claiming another falsehood. In case you've short term memory loss or just plain forgot, the conspiracy theory was that an ad for Win10 was included in the March KB3139929 or its GDR KB3146449(i.e. non-security content in a security patch)...with everyone trying to prove such a thing occured. Not a single person on this planet has proven what they showed or read elsewhere - not a single report was caused by either KB security update, but just an ad pushed out by MSn(and if you haven't been paying attention not the first time MSn's media portal sites have included a Win10 banner). This Rollup for Win7(this thread's discussion) is no different - no consipracy theory, no GWX app, no 'Learn more about Win10 and upgrade' option related KB installed is included in the Win7 Roll UP. As noted in the initial post, the conspiracy theorist will show up without any validation. - You just joined that club! -- ...winston msft mvp windows experience |

I installed the rollup on a VM copy of Win 7 Ultimate that was otherwise reasonably up to date, minus the GWX stuff, thanks to GWX Control Panel. After the installation of the rollup, which went without a hitch, GWX Control Panel hadn't changed its status one bit. It still said there was no sign of any GWX-related crap, and no WU settings had been changed. MS *seems* to have done the right thing here, which seems odd after all of the recent missteps. |

Windows Update Client for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: March 2016 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612 Security update for Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers: May 10, 2016 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3153199 Install, in the order shown above(IE11, WU Client, Kernel update). I tried IE11, plus the Cumulative Update, and the delay is 84 minutes. The point is, the rollup by itself, isn't making Windows 7 reinstallation any easier. There is still an 84 minute delay. What's the difference between rollup 84 minute delay Review a smaller number of updates versus 84 minute delay review all updates It's still freaking annoying. The installation time is shorter - the rollup method is faster than slogging through updates one at a time. But the 84 minute delay fouls up any idea of a workflow for anyone doing this. I've run a whole set of test cases, to reduce the WU time delay, and the only thing that works, is to install all the updates. At some point, I had to stop installing "interesting" ones, one at a time, to narrow down which provided the best leverage. Using intuition, and selecting interesting ones, got me from 80 minutes to 50 minutes. I'm not really interested in repeating that exercise, even in the name of science. And yes, as part of the "interesting" ones, I installed *all* the WU related ones. I expect 612 was in that lot. And the win32 kernel driver - no difference. If you use Process Explorer and take a stack snapshot of the errant process, you always find it waiting on the same semiphore. But that could be perfectly normal, so I can't declare "aha!" based on seeing that. If it was deadlocked, it would never come back. But it always seems to come back. Paul |
