I love this NG!

Every day that I read it I am reminded of how right I am to avoid
Win10 if at all possible. To that end, I decided to get a new
computer with Win7pro (it was delivered yesterday) to start
configuring it as a replacement for my 7 year old WinXPpro box.
When/if the WinXP box dies, I want to have a fully configured
replacement ready to go. At my age, this will probably be my last
computer. I'm thankful it's not a Win10 box.

Claim the *FREE* Win 10 upgrade anyway! You could shelf it afterwards.

Newsgroups are like a balance sheet. There are pluses
and minuses listed, there is a bit of trolling.

On the positive side, the Win10 Start menu supports left-click
and right-click, and items you used to have to type the
name in Windows 7, you can select those items from the menu.

But that's about it for positives.

I'm glad I'm not working in a computer store
on a commission.

I think I'll go see if they're hiring at Fotomat. Aw, damn.

Yep! I, for one, do sort of like Windows 10, despite of some huge
mistakes (IMHO) made by Microsoft. I agree with some criticisms, but at
the end of the day the new Windows gets its job done, doesn't it?, and
it is going to be the new standard for PC hardware and software from now
on. There are things I don't like, but, well, I just don't use them!
Of course you could still stick with Windows 7 for the next four years
(i.e. as long as it gets security updates) if you like it better, but
having sailed the new ship I don't see reasons to go back.
My only caveat would be: do not pick the Home version, go Pro. That
would grant some extra features and more control over how your system is
updated.

There is no such thing as a program which is both open-source and bug-free.

Of course NOT, unless you wanna talk about program security!

How could you secure a program when the OS and the underlying firmware
were never secured?

Let's go back to bug-free, open source magic mirrors and crystal balls!
How could you trust them?

Not these days, anyhow.
I did write a few _small_ bug-free programs with limited functionality,
years ago. But they did the job I wanted them to do.

When a program grows too big like Window$, it's harder for a SINGLE
person to spot bugs that require elaborate testing.

Why single person, you might ask? Think about it....

But can you INSTALL it *after* the free period? NO.

https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1014742

If you don't use that CD where you put the Win10 install image before
the freebie expires, you'll be resting your coffee mug on that coaster.

I suggest before doing any updates on your new W7 system, that you
configure it to reject W10 nag alerts and downloads. Microsoft really,
REALLY wants EVERYONE ot run W10, and will do whatever is required to
achieve that goal. So, be cautious.

I think the little booth that used to be Fotomat is still standing
empty in the parking lot of my local supermarket. It's got to be 15 or
more years since anyone was inside it.

I don't do updates. In the seven years I've been using WinXPproSP2, I
have never done a single windows update. I don't trust them.

When I got the new Win7Pro box, the first thing I did was turn off
updates _before_ plugging it into the Internet.
