Default Should I buy win 10 laptop or win 10 tablet computer?

I am an old person who has mobility problems and is confined to sitting in a
recliner chair most of the time.

I am no longer able to use my desktop computer (Windows 10) and need to
switch to either a laptop or a tablet. I do not like the Android OS,
probably because I grew up with Windows. Fortunately, most laptops and even
most 10" tablets now seem to come with Windows 10 pre-installed.

Should I buy a laptop or tablet? My main computing activities revolve around
the following: Browsing the Web for world news, financial news, science
news. Writing letters, using Word 2003, Listening to mp3 music from my hard
drive. Keeping track of e-mail. Read e-books. And, last but not least,
roaming newsgroups. Without a DVD drive, it would not be possible to watch
movies on a tablet, but I can live with that.

Thanks for any input.

I'd suggest a laptop which turns into a tablet for convenience.
Something like my wife's Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 would probably please you
immensely.

So why buy a laptop or a tablet when what you need is a desktop.
Desktops are cheaper and they are relativey secure than laptops or
Tablets. Burglars like old people like you and they can take away
anything they can carry. Desktops can be quite heavy for them to
carry. With you on your recliner chair, you won't be able to do
anything about it.

you say you are an old people so how old are you? Do you meet our
statistical profile of octogenarians? We seem to have many here (nearly
99%) and this year we are likely to see many have gone to Allah!!! How
this newsgroup looks at the end of the year is something we can't predict.

What about those who want to read in bed? I'm still waiting for
something like the "Surface Pro 4" but with a LARGER screen. That is
a large one with a detachable screen, so I can read my squillions of
PDF books. I reckon a 15" screen would be OK. Then I could synch
from the desktop to that 15" tablet.

I do almost all of my reading in bed. These days, when I travel I
travel with an android phone (5" screen) and reading Kindle books on
it in bed is fine.

I would buy a laptop, unless the neighborhood you live in is Chicago,
New York, or other high crime area.

I have both a laptop and a desktop. With a laptop you can sit in your
favorite chair and do what you do with a computer. If you have a
wireless LAN (wireless routers are cheap if you don't have one.) you can
visit the sites you like on the internet.

A laptop has a decent size screen, and you can get one with a decent
amount of ram and hard drive space. The key broad is of a size that you
can actually touch type. It can be used with a mouse or similar input
device. I routinely write many lengthy emails, and write documents in
my wordprocessor.

With a tablet you a you will be limited as to input device. Touch
screens are very inaccurate, and almost worthless it you want to run any
Windows programs, or other programs where you need to have precision for
inputting data to the screen. Programs like Word processing,
spreadsheets, etc.

Most tablets have no where near the ram and disk space storage of
today's average laptop. When it comes to price you will get a laptop
with more capabilities than a tablet at a cheaper price.

If you are still not sure about a laptop vs tablet, look at the
accessories that are sold for both. With a laptop the main accessory is
a mouse, you may also wish to buy a case to carry it in if you take it
places with you.

On the other hand there are dozens of accessories to make the tablet
into a laptop. I counted the tablet keyboards at the local Walmart and
there were about a dozen available. Some were integrated into the
tablet case, and some were sold separately.

From the accessories available for a tablet, it looks like people like
to say they have a tablet, but to make it useable they then buy
accessories to make it into a laptop.

That's newer than anything that I have, but I absolutely love the older
Lenovo X200T or, especially, the later 201T, 220Tand so on.

Because they are full laptops as well as tablets, they are well
balanced, with the weight in the keyboard rather than the screen, and
they will work as tablets either normal or upright orientation.

The later ones work with keyboard, mouse, trackpoint, pen and capacitive
finger touch. The pen input is excellent for drawing or precise
pointing, unlike most finger tablets.

They also run full Windows and have proper-size HD's or SSD's.

If the Yoga's are anything like as good, they would indeed be ideal.

I would be very wary of ever buying again something that uses a Wimboot
based OS like many Windows 8.1 and 10 tablets. The OS's can be updated,
but only by losing the space that the compressed OS gives.

Most of mine are in PDF format (with color pictures too).

Get a laptop if you still need Office and other work-related funcitons!
Tablets are more geared towards entertainment.

Is it wise for an old man to go to bed with his laptop or tablet? Don't
you know that batteries can explode. Even the DELL machines have
exploded because some octogenarian went to bed and hid it under his
duvet while still switched on.

In fact you should not have any any electronic gadgets in your bed room
because there is ample evidence that they can disturb your sleep. You
want to go to the bedroom to sleep not to play some electronic games or
even to read. Reading should be in the study room.

I've always had a radio to send me off to sleep. Talk-back radio here
goes all night long and it sure beats a nanny bed-time story.

"old" doesn't mean 'decrepit', you know...

seriously?

tablets have limited usefulness but greater portability, so I'd weigh
the contradictions of usefulness vs portability vs price against one
another and pick the 'best fit'.

Useful if they have a 'green ink' mode.

The reason I recommend the Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 in particular is because it
provides the same kind of functionality as a Surface Book but at a much
lower price. The most important thing on that laptop, for me in
particular, is how well-built the hinges are. The first and second Yoga
Pro could go from laptop to tablet quite easily, but after a while the
hinges would break since plastic wears out fairly rapidly in that kind
of a context. the Yoga Pro uses quality metal and one look at the unit
makes it very apparent that it is solid in addition to being incredibly
mobile. If I didn't play games, it would be my dream machine but I'm
content in watching my wife use it and I have no reason to suspect that
it will fall apart like her three previous laptops did. In addition to
that, the screen is magnificent and provides what I believe is a
3200x1800 resolution all the while providing the same amount of real
estate as a 1080p screen. For an older individual with possibly poor
eye-sight, the sharpness of the screen bundled with the fact that icons
and text are still fairly large should be perfect. It is also extremely
light which makes it a perfect candidate for tablet use, especially for
reading.

Tech Radar weren't very impressed withe the Yoga Pro 3, they also said
it was less powerful than the Pro 2:
