Default Sort files by ?? type is missing

Doug I'm sort of lost here. I want to see the extension on each file listed.
I can't follow your explanation can you help me with this?

Ray,

Open one Explorer window and highlight My Computer. Right click on one of
the column headers, and make sure that "Type" is checked off. Next go to
Tools, Folder Options, View and click Apply to All Folders. Every window
that I've opened has had the Type column visible, so far.
