Default New Windows Edition 7 ?

I have a Dell XPS 8500, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1,
with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender
and Windows firewall.

(1) TB HD
Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-33-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
Ram 12.0 GB
System type : 64-bit operating system

I also have

I have a Dell Optiplex 780 Tower, with Windows 7 Professional,
SP1, with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender
and Windows firewall.

Intel (R) Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz
4GB RAM, 750 GB HD
System type : 64-bit operating system

and (external hard drives)

Seagate Backup Plus 1(TB) 2.5 USB Portable HD

WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200
RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal
Hard Drive

I was making a restore point on the 8500 when I saw the

'Get more features with a new edition of Windows 7'

in blue under Windows edition.

My question is it OK to do this? or will it screw things
up for me?

Thanks,
Robert

Yeah, it'll probably screw things up for you, but then, probably not. I
just don't think you'll get very far, since MS may not offer any W7
editions anymore???

However, the idea of that method of updating your W7 edition, is to
allow an upgrade to a different edition of W7. Since you already have
Pro - you could go up to Enterprise or Ultimate.

But why would you? (You have the Professional edition).

Just found some more info here...

This shows the procedure.

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4049...er-you-should/

However, at this late date, Anytime Upgrade is no longer
for sale. If you don't have a key to type in, it can't work.

The reason this works, is the OS installation contains files
for more than one version of Windows 7. If you enter the $$$ new key
you paid for, this "authorizes" the linking in, of files from
WinSXS to the system folder. And this changes the version
of Windows 7.

Since you already have Pro, the only edition higher for you
is Ultimate. And that stopped being a good deal a long time
ago (no more special stuff being added for Ultimate).

Just ignore it, and continue with what you were doing.
You've already got the "best" version.

I knew you'd have the answer for me.

In passing, I have been diligent in
creating Mrimg back-ups and everything
seems to be working fine.

Thanks,
Robert

You might ask in the right NG.

That was helpful. But that's you all over.
alt.windows7.general
Why did you not mention this?
Don't be shy, tell us.

He is coming in via Google Groups.

Google Groups carries microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
but not alt.windows7.general.

Alt.windows7.general is not archived in Google Groups.
Only articles which are cross-posted, may accidentally
get archived and show up in a search.

Google is missing a bunch of alt.* groups, and
that happens because there is no "newgroup"
path in alt, to automatically enable them.

On regular news servers, alt.windows7.general
is added by hand. You must contact an Administrator
to get it done. Where is the Administrator on
Google Groups ? Etc.

To ask in the right NG, he would need to:

1) Install Thunderbird.
2) Configure for one of the free newsservers that
uses NNTP protocol.
3) Update group list.
4) Select alt.windows7.general and "Subscribe".
Then go back to the groups list and list the
headers in the group.

This is a lot different than the Google interface.

You're free to write up a primer if you wish... :-)
Don't forget to include pictures.
