Default How can I lessen the sound level of just the "error" bong?

I can easily lower all sounds but I only want to lessen the volume of the
error bong sound I get whenever I hit the wrong button in a program or
whatever causes that error bong to sound.

I don't mind the error bong itself and I can easily lessen the volume of
all sounds but I just want the error bong volume to be lessened to a pip.

Find it in its system folder, and replace it with one that says in a
really sexy, female voice "Hello Joe, when can we meet up?"

Assuming Microsoft has not gotten around to nuking sound
settings in the desktop operating system, yet... You can change
system sounds by right clicking on the speaker icon in the
notification tray Sounds.

In that widget, the warning bong turned out to be the "Asterisk" or maybe
"System Notification" (they seem to be the same sound to me).

But I can't find a file called those names.

But this file seems to be the notification bong I am asking about.
c:\windows\media\windows background.wav

Testing all the sounds in that sound panel, they're all too loud except for
maybe the two "Disambiguation" sounds but those names don't exist in the
file system.

The closest I can find on the file system is this.
c:\windows\media\speech disambiguation.wav

Although this sound seems to be a good quick not-too-loud notification.
c:\windows\media\windows ding.wav

But this was the right volume.
c:\windows\media\windows startup.wav

So I changed the "System Notification" sound from "windows background.wav"
to "windows startup.wav".

Darn. It didn't work. Maybe I need to reboot.

I think you're on the right track. If you DO find the sound that is too
loud you could load it into Audacity and edit the levels down some and
export it as another name. Then change the settings to use your new
sound file.

You can record your own sound and have the entry that now plays a bong
point to it. I had an early phone machine that didn't play a beep
before recording the message** so I would say, "Please leave a message
at the sound of the beep. Beep." Or "at the sound of the gong" and
then I'd hit a wok with a stick. For a while the messages said "Please
leave a message starting now." and a lot of people had trouble with
that. I'd hear them say, I don't know whether to leave a message or
not.

**because it started recording right away. That is, every time it
recorded both the outgoing and incoming meessages. I thought I'd get
sick of hearing my own voice, but you know, I never did.

If what you mean by "lessen the volume of all sounds" is the general
audio level rather than just the level of system sounds, you may be able
to adjust the system sounds (i.e. the "error bong") by RIGHT clicking on
the speaker and then click on "Open Volume Mixer", where you can lower
the level of only system sounds. Note that this is somewhat dependent on
what the drivers for the audio card in your computer supports, but it's
generic enough that most computers should have a similar capability.

On my W10 Pro system when I right click on the sound icon in the task
bar I have an option called "Open Volume Mixer". When I open the mixer
I have an option for "System Sounds" which lets me adjust all the system
sounds at one time. No allowance for individual sounds but at least I
have the option.

Not sure if the options I see are from Windows or one of the sound
drivers my laptop is using so your millage may vary.

This works in windows 7.
Search the windows directory tree for *.wav
Identify the wave file that makes the sound you want to change.
Edit the wav file.
I did this for the "you've got mail" sound to lower it's volume.
All you need is a sound editor to rerecord the file at a lower level.

You may have to work around permission issues. I took ownership
of everything, so I didn't have that problem.

That's nice!
It works fine!

I didn't know there was a different mixer control for system versus speaker
sounds on my desktop!

I'll try it out for a few days but it seems like the cat's meow!

Or simply save the modified WAV to another location, like in your own
profile or public folders 'MyError.wav' and adjust notification with the
browse button to the new sound file.

I'd opt for creating my own error audio and making the volume as low as
I wanted with the file itself. I'd then tell Windows to use that error
audio file instead of the default. I'm not sure, but, I don't think you
can specify a specific system sound file and give it it's own audio
level as opposed to all system sounds. But the aforementioned work
around is a way to accomplish the same thing. I don't have a win10 vm
running at the moment to confirm whether or not you can adjust
individual system sounds as opposed to all of them, sorry.
