It could possibly be associated with a load of security updates to
Office 2007 which I installed on 2nd August, but my feeling is that it's
more recent than that.

Anyone else experienced this? Any clues about what to look for?

TIA.

I click once on the button to view its menu, including recent documents.
I click on it again to close its menu. That works for me.

Is it possible that your PC mouse is reporting a double click when you
click only once? I had that happen because my mouse was failing. I had
to buy a new mouse to correct the problem.

I did wonder about that, because I'm using a wireless mouse which can
sometimes be troublesome.

However, I've just tried a wired mouse, and it's exactly the same.
Similarly when I bring up the Office menu with ALT/F without using a
mouse at all, the same thing happens.

Any other ideas?

Did you check the double-click speed setting in the Mouse applet in
Control Panel?

This is a new problem and has only existed for a few days. Office
2007 (32 bit) running on W7 Pro (32 bit).

When I click on the Office icon, the usual menu appears - file menu

Did you disable any add-ons you installed into Office?

Not knowingly!

Another test would be to boot Windows in its safe mode and then test the
behavior of the Office components. If the problem goes away, something
you installed as a startup program is causing the interference.

Are you sure you haven't minimized the ribbon? When you do, in Excel
2007 the ribbon auto-hides itself when you come back to the document.

See if this matches what you're seeing:

Thanks, but no - I haven't minimised the ribbon. And even if I had, the
Office button would still be there. The issue isn't that anything isn't
visible, but rather that the Office menu opens and then immediately closes.

I minimized the ribbon in both Word and Excel (2007). That did not
change the way the button's menu worked. For me, the menus -- each with
a list of recent files -- remained open until I clicked again.

That's what it's supposed to do - and what mine did until a few days ago!

Is it _only_ Office? I have a vague memory of seeing a "how long things
stay open" setting somewhere in Windows - could it be that that has got
changed?

Yes, it is *only* Office - and not *all* of Office. The problem exists
in Word, Excel and Powerpoint - whereas Publisher, Outlook and Project
are ok.

Basically, the problem applies to those apps which use an Office button
and ribbon menu. The apps which use a conventional UI with the main menu
showing File, Edit, View, etc. are ok. Office 2007 contains some of both
types - dunno about later versions.

I suggest try to reset Office 2007 by using Microsoft Tool:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/822005/how-to-reset-user-options-and-registry-settings-in-word

Try it and it might fix for both Excel & Word and any other office
packages you have installed.

Not a lot of point. Double click works normally in other applications.
And the problem is still there if I open the Office menu with ALT/F -

Thanks, but it's nothing to do with the ribbon. It's the Office menu -
which is essentially the File menu plus list of recent files - which
opens when you click on the Office button at the top left. In my case,
it opens and then closes after a couple of seconds before I can select
anything.

Someone suggested that the problem may be connected in some way with
Dropbox. This seems quite possible. I have closed all Dropbox processes
in Task Manager, and this *appears* to have fixed the problem. It's too
early to tell whether I've *really* fixed it - but it looks hopeful.

It doesn't need to open its own window. If it's set to start with Windows (icon in
the notification area of the taskbar) and is running in the background, that's
apparently enough to trigger the problem. I gather it seems to be briefly grabbing
the focus every 3 seconds which causes the dropdowns in Office to lose focus and
snap back up. Apparently you can also see hilighted cells in Excel flicker very
slightly every three seconds if you look carefully.

Right-click on the Dropbox icon in the notification area and then click on the
gear wheel in the top-right corner of the window that pops up and select
'Preferences...'.
On the Preferences dialog that appears, select 'Never show' in the Dropbox Badge
dropdown and OK the dialog. See if that cures the problem.
Incidentally the version I have is currently at 32.4.23 (bottom of the above
dialog).

Thanks. I'll file that for later use. Since I actually use Dropbox very
rarely, I've disabled it in Startup - so it's not running at all. Doing
that seems to have made the Office menu problem go away. I've discovered
that Dropbox automatically updated itself at about the time when the
problem started - so that was almost certainly the cause.

If I *do* ever need to use Dropbox in future, I'll apply the 'badge' fix.

For Office *2007*? I don't think Dropbox will spend any time fixing
their newest version program on an archaic version of Office whose
standard support ended back in October 2012 and whose *extended* support
ends in a couple months in October 2017. Of course, any company is
willing to expend resources on any project if you pay them enough.
