Default Wifi

I have XP Sp3, Internet Explorer V8.
I use Firefox for browsing & never use IE.
I use a desktop computer, which has an AT&T modem connected to the
computer using an ethernet connection.
The modem provides wireless connection to AT&T DirectTV

I tried once unsuccessfully to establish a Wifi connection to the modem.

Is it even possible to set up Wifi on an XP computer?

If so, can someone provide a tutorial?

Thanks

WiFi works fine on XP. Once it sees the WiFi adapter you should have a
WiFi icon on the task bar, click that, start a scan for sites select
the one you want, enter the password and off you go.

That's for setting up a wifi connection _from_ the computer to the
modem/router.

If, in contrast, you're wanting to keep your ethernet connection to the
modem/router (which I would, unless you have a good reason not to), but
are wanting to set up (turn on?) the wifi capabilities of the
modem/router, maybe so you can use it with a smart TV, smartphone, or
similar: then you need to get into the modem/router's control interface.
Usually this is done via a browser - any browser will do, on XP (or even
earlier I think). If you've still got (or can download) the MoDem's
handbook, it'll tell you the URL to use, but if not, try
http://192.168.1.0, or 192.168.0.1, or ...0.0, or ...1.1, or 10.0.0.2 -
one of those five should work. You'll get what looks like a web page,
but with the logo of the manufacturer (i. e. AT&T) at top left, and
should be able to click through "links" until you get to where you set
up the wifi (turn it on, name it, and determine what encryption, and the
key). If at some point it asks you for a login and password, try admin
and password, or admin and admin. (These - and the URL, for that matter
- may be on a label on the back or bottom of the MoDem.)

Let's understand the question. You want to connect your TV to
the modem via wireless ?
If you mean connect your computer to the modem via wireless,
there's no point as you already have a much faster (and safer)
Ethernet connection.

I read that somewhere before, but no such icon exists.

To clarify - are you wanting to:

1. Just activate/set up the wifi in the modem/router, so you can use it
with other devices (such as smartphones, tablets, visitor's equipment,
maybe your TV), while keeping the XP desktop computer connected to the
router by cable?

OR

2. change the connection from the XP desktop computer to the router,
from ethernet cable to wifi?

If 1., see my earlier post: setting up the wifi on the router isn't a
matter of "doing it from XP" - you just control the router through its
HTML interface from the browser, which certainly can be _done_ from XP.

If 2. (and like others, I'd say don't unless you have a good reason -
the only one I can think of being domestic harmony, i. e. your spouse
has asked if you can get rid of unsightly cables), then: (a) does your
desktop computer even _have_ wifi capability [a lot don't - if it does,
it will _probably_ have a "rubber duck" aerial, though not necessarily];
(b) [assuming it does have wifi] if you go into Device Manager [Control
Panel | System | Hardware], do you see the wireless network adapter
under Network adapters, and it's not disabled or otherwise had a problem
shown against it? (c) [if that's OK] under Network Connections [it's
under Start | Settings on this computer] - what do you see?

I reckon in a few years we'll have GoogleBum. You'll type in someone's name
and it will show you what their bum looks like. Even if they've never posted a
nude picture, it will reconstruct their bum from bits of their face and leg
and whatever else they can find. - Charlie Brooker, RT 2014/12/13-19

Right click "My network places" or whatever it is in English,
--- properties----- double click "wireless connections" --- then
click the "show icon in taskbar". There are two icon boxes, you can
enable both.
If drivers are not installed, or if wifi is disabled, nothing
will appear. Which is kind of expected.
All you need are the drivers. I never install the third party
software that comes with the wifi card/USB.

Seconded. It's usually non-standard, and rarely does anything more than
that built into Windows itself.

(Though we still need to know whether you're just wanting to turn the
wifi on in your router for use with other devices, or whether you really
want to give up the ethernet connection from your desktop computer to
the router; if the former, you don't need wifi drivers in the wired
computer.)

Others have given you the information for what you want to do but you
dont seem to say anywhere that you actually have a desktop with WiFi
card in it, which is of course the very first requirement, if not then
maybe get youself a cheap USB WiFi dongle! C+

I don't recommend a really cheap USB Wifi dongle, unless you've
verified via customer reviews, that it lasts. Some of the cheap ones
seem to have a dropping output level after only three months.

And whether Wifi is a big win, depends on what standards
are involved. It's pretty hard to get blazing speed out
of Wifi. A wired connection can be more consistent.
(The 60GHz Wifi can get 700MB/sec transfer speeds, but
only in the same room, and maybe 5-8 feet from one
another. Hardly practical.)

WinXP has Wireless Zero Config for Wifi setup. Or a Wifi product
can come with its own GUI interface for setup, using a CD in
the box.
