'Invisible' W8 installation
I've had a problem for some considerable time where the W8.1 update
wouldn't work on my dual boot (Ubuntu and grub as boot manager) system. I thought this was a problem with grub and decided to try and fix this today. I booted from my W8 upgrade DVD and tried the repair options. Followed various strategies but then noted that W8 off the CD couldn't find any W8 install, but was reporting two Windows Vista installs. Now there was a backup image (old) of Vista at the back end of the 1TB HDD but the first image on the drive was Windows 8 which booted fine through grub. So I am baffled as to why W8 is not being identified - I did a clean install from the upgrade media before adding anything else to the drive. However this probably explains why W8.1 upgrade wouldn't work if Windows can't find a W8 install. Used the same media to install W8 (now upgraded to 8.1) on my laptop and that is working fine (apart from some Microsoft sh*t with Skype which prevents you using your Skype ID with the App - you need to install the full program to use Skype as it was). I feel a brand new install coming on. Cheers Dave R |

I restored the boot sector/MBR (I think) from the command line in Recovery. When the Recovery commands searched for Windows installations to rebuild the boot menu they found two Windows installations on the disc (as they should) but both were identified as Windows Vista. I was also given the option afterwards to quit or boot another version of Windows. Again, Vista was offered. Fortunately I don't have a lot invested in the W8 system so I'll just scrub the disc and start again. Cheers Dave R |

I thought the problem might be Grub getting in the way, but the attempted repair using W8 boot media has made me wonder. |
