My info screen no longer says 'Insider Preview' and there is no logo in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen saying Build XXXXX. Maybe this IS the real deal :-) -- SC Tom |

Inside updates, Advanced, I can not longer locate fast or slow. But I now have a button to disable Insider Updates. ???? |

Thank anyway! -T Can you hear me clucking like a Chicken? That site includes this text: Windows 10 RTM build 10240 x64 ISO was created by me from the ESD file downloaded through Windows Update. You can download with confidence. Doesn't that last sentence give you all of the confidence that you need? ;-) But seriously, my advice to myself is that it doesn't matter so much where you get something as long as the checksum is correct (preferably not just MD5, but something better). In this case, since the guy made the ISO himself, I wouldn't be surprised if the checksum is unique, which is not good. |

In this case, since the guy made the ISO himself, I wouldn't be surprised if the checksum is unique, which is not good. If the media has "install.esd", the encrypted WIM, the signature on each of those is normally unique per subscriber. So he in effect, is distributing an ISO "with his name on it". I tested this back in Win8 days, and *every* download which has an install.esd inside (not an install.wim), the thing is encrypted to prevent casual inspection. And each download has a unique signature. If you download the same ISO twice, the checksum is different on *each* one. And the unique signature would also serve to trace the source of the material (with a lot of work of course). They could trace to an IP and time of day, go to the ISP and get an ID from them. Or using data mining, trace back what other details the individual left via his Windows OS and purchasing habits. For example, in my case, if I were to have distributed my Win8 downloaded ISO with install.esd, they have the credit card number I used to pay them $39.95, to figure out the source of the media. His ISO checksum will be unique, but for the wrong reasons. It's not something he inserted, it's that the install.esd is different on each and every download. Only an unpolluted ISO, such as MSDN subscription DVD with install.wim, is "safe" to Torrent. And Microsoft removed the easily accessible SHA1 sums for those, preventing people from "Torrenting in confidence". (Only an MSDN subscriber can see the checksums now, as far as I know.) In addition, the MDL site, a favorite place to get checksums, has gone underground - only members can view posts and read all the content. They still allow visitors, but many posts will not be readable. So one alternative source of checksums is also no longer available. So if you were a person who relies on checksums, you're a long way from Kansas, Toto. Only the MSDN ones are redistributable, and then, you typically (as a non-subscriber) don't have access to the checksum (as generated by Microsoft). I would be getting my smelly 10240 ISO, straight from Microsoft :-) Encryption and all. A possible way to do it... 1) Back up 10166 C: drive. 2) Start the update to 10240. 3) When it is about finished, capture whatever files and folder are used as starting materials to make ISO. 4) Let upgrade install finish. 5) Make ISO 10240 from the leftovers. 6) Restore from backup. 7) Now you can do any kind of install you want, subject to the limits of the media. 8) Method only makes matching bitness. Your Win10TP x64 will make a 10240 x64 ISO this way, not an x32 one. I'd have done this by now, but I'm missing step (3) :-) I know there is a recipe out there somewhere... Paul |
