Default Windows 10: Good choice!

We're almost in July 29, which system should a beginner choose, let's say a
young customer? We only have available Windows 8.1 and soon the last great
masterpiece from MS, Windows 10. Or we choose an Android tablet to go.
Android is suitable for playing and surfing the web, but to work, in my
opinion, Windows is better. So to those who doesn't like Windows 8.1 the
time is now to go for the brand new Windows 10. And what about older people?
Should they quit the job? I guess we're not wanted anymore. Why keep trying
to use Windows 7 or XP if those system will be discontinued? Should older
people go for Linux and start learning a new system? I suppose that's not
kind for us. Maybe the solution is getting Windows 8.1 while it is still
available on market and accept we've been overcome. We already belong to the
past. Then where should we go with our old fashion systems? Who will care
talking to people with ghost systems? My prognostic is Windows 10 is the
beginning of a new age for entertainment technology and I'm out.

Probably more people on a desktop are out than Microsoft realizes. But
they think they will catch IOS on a phone. I think android will not be
caught on a phone. And Microsoft will never catch IOS because they give
the OS away and Microsoft will never do that except for this 1 time,
because if I had to pay for this win 10 I would never run it.

In my opinion Windows 10 is the beginning of the end for Microsoft.
Windows 7 was the best operating system they ever produced, and they
have been going downhill since.

I would suggest changing to Linux Mint 17.1 KDE. I have been using it
for a year and a half after giving up on Microsoft, and love it.

http://www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=23

You can also subscribe to alt.os.linux.mint and get all the help you
need to learn how to use it.

The problems people have when changing from Windows to Linux, are caused
by using the Command Line Interface before learning how to use it
properly, but with Linux Mint KDE the command line is not necessary.
Every thing can be done from System Settings and the Panel menu.

I have to admit it takes a while to learn how to use Linux without
screwing it up to the point it is useless, and I'm sure it would be the
same for someone learning to use Windows 8 for the first time.

Where Linux Mint really has Microsoft beat is installing the operating
system, and updating it. I can do it in about twenty minutes, compared
to two hours for Windows 7.

Firefox is the the browser for Linux Mint, and you can install
Thunderbird.

Why not Linux Mint 17.2?
http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
http://www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=25
(Cinnamon and Maté are the main editions)

Because KDE is the most configurable from the Panel menu and System
Settings. KDE 17.2 is not ready for release yet.

If You notice my headers You will see that I am posting from Linux. I
pretty much use it as the number 1 OS on this computer. Also residing on
this computer is Win7,Win 8.1 and Win 10.About the only thing I need
windows for anymore is viewing Dish Anywhere as Dish dosn't support
Linux. They claim that they will soon support it.I can view Netflix on
Linux by using Chrome browser. I'm just pretty much am at a point where
I can live without Windows with 5 years to spare. So I refuse to let
Microsoft control what I do on My machine. I wish Microsoft well and
hope they do well.

Just what advantages does Windows 10 present over Windows 7?

I haven't used it yet so I can't comment on it.

The Win10TP behaved like 8.x, not like 7, so I don't think it's likely that
10RTM will suddenly behave like 7. That would be a major change at a very
late date.

Or get a computer with Windows 7 Pro from a manufacturer which exercises
downgrade rights from Windows 8.x Pro. (That is what many businesses
are doing today.)

Or choose Linux Mint (or another recommended good distro).

Windows 10 does not behave like Windows 7 did. Windows 10 behaves
more like Windows 8.x.

The Windows 10 start menu is like a non-maximised Win 8 start page with
an option to go full screen.

There are some very professional and reliable Linux distros. I have
seen more program crashes in the Windows 10 alleged RTM (TH1 10240) in
the last two days than I have seen in Linux Mint in the last year.

It is interesting how Slimer, in another post, could consider moving to
Linux.

Windows 8, once you go into desktop mode, behaves very much like 7 did
IMO. From what I've seen in previews, Windows 10 acts just like Windows 8
did in desktop mode which should not be unfamiliar for Windows 7 users at
all and therefore very similar to 7. It completely obliterates the Start
screen as a separate area and instead includes it in the Start menu which
seems like the perfect compromise to make sure that users who held off on
using Windows 8 and 8.1 are pleased.

Trust me when I tell you that going to Linux, to me, is a humongous
compromise. I love the philosophy behind it and as a teacher who believes
that transparency and accessibility are incredibly important, Linux is
exactly what is most compatible with my frame of mind. Unfortunately, I
hate the code and find way too many bugs for my liking whenever I use
Linux. Not only that but the community behind it is the most repulsive
bunch of liars I've ever encountered. As someone who donated significant
amounts of money over the years to free software projects, it disgusts me
to know that some of the people I've encountered were the ones who
benefited from those donations.

Well...Downgrade rights on 8x Pro to 7 Pro are quite clear. It remains
incumbent upon the end-user to provide the downgrade o/s and license.

I can only guess from this that you haven't used Linux recently. Even
if you do think it's buggy, there's still another 5 years before you
need to find an alternative to Windows 7, and who knows what will be
available then.

My sentiments exactly. At my age, there's every chance Windows 7 will
see me out, and I'm certainly not changing it unless I really have to.
On the other hand, if I could lay hands on a legal, free Windows 10
..iso, I would much prefer it on my old laptop to the Debian that
currently runs thereon.
