I never use Edge so I removed it. Winaero has an Edge uninstaller that
works well. Get the Edge Uninistaller he

Winaero also has a Cortana removal tool which works well. I have
uninstalled all apps, cortana and edge. Windows 10 is much better
without the useless crap I don't use. Yes, they all come back after a
major update but it only takes a few minutes to remove the bloat.

So why bother with Win10 in the first place? Stick in the 20thC.
with Win7 or even Vista.

IMO, the only thing Edge has going for it is that it wears the crown as
worst browser,

A very strong ditto!

which it stole from IE by being, well, worse. It does,
however, work great to download a better browser.

What alternative is there?
It's very quick to open (compare to IE or Chrome or Firefox) with

Maybe. But since I keep FireFox open all the time, I don't really
care.

Even if that's true and even if I didn't keep FireFox open, that would
be such a slight advantage of Edge that I wouldn't care

useful additions available for ad blocking and so on. Improvements
continue as Windows releases new versions (Redstone 4, 5 and so on).

I agree that Edge has improved since it was first released. But so
have almost all the other browsers. As far as I'm concerned, Edge
remains the worst choice, by far.

What will the future bring? Might Edge some day overtake all its
competition and be the best choice? I don't know. It's possible, but I
strongly doubt it. Nevertheless I'll continue to do what I do with
almost all kinds of software--continue to use what I think is best,
but try its competition every now and then to see what's new and
different. Again, I strongly doubt it, but it's possible that some day
I will find Edge to be the best choice and switch to it.

Here's my personal ranking of browsers, from best to worst:

FireFox
Maxthon
....
All the others that I haven't tried recently enough to have a strong
opinion of, so I can't put them in order.
....
Chrome
IE
Edge

I don't agree. Like you, I never use Edge or Cortana, but I let them
remain. It doesn't hurt to have applications that I don't use stay
there. Some day I may want to get to a web site that I can't get to
with FireFox, and so on.

The only advantage in getting rid of an unused program is that you
save a little disk space. But if that small amount of disk space is
important to you, you have major problems that need a better solution.

Thanks, but from my original post:

By the way, in researching this I learned that "disable background
apps" in the current Win-10 version is also not permanent. They are
re-enabled during reboot. The cure for that is he
https://winaero.com/blog/disable-bac...-version-1803/

That no longer stops Edge, however. ----------

Strange - I'm running 1803 (17134.228) and Edge stays off. I've got most
Background Apps turned off so perhaps one of the others is affecting it.

I've preferred Firefox since I first heard of it. when the current
version was .8.

Leaving out Opera as usual. That's not so bad, considering that modern
Opera is so much like Chrome.

Firefox is on the top of my list too.

BTW, I'm actually looking at my website with Firefox .8, 9, 12, 48, 52,
and the current version. Except for .8 and current, these are the last
versions for different Windows systems.

I wouldn't red rid of them, but a good OFF switch would be nice to have.

Stupid suggestion. Why would I want to run those ancient obsolete
systems? Did you move to Windows 10 for the apps and cortana?

I don't use apps, edge or cortana, they are useless to me, so I remove
them. Windows 10 runs perfect without the bloatware that I don't use
or want. My main PC runs Windows 10 LTSB which has none of the
bloatware that regular Windows 10 has. The 1 pc that runs Windows 10
Pro gets the crap removed so it is much the same as LTSB.

No, you get rid if an unused, unwanted program because it is unwanted,
no need to keep an unwanted program is there? As I said, disk space is
not a concern. Since Win 10 first came out I have removed apps, edge
and cortana and I have not had one problem that was caused by the
removal of those apps. I have also not had the problems that those
apps cause.

I left it out because I don't have enough experience with it to
compare it with others, and put it in a specific place in my list. All
I know about it is that I don't like it all, and it places somewhere
in the middle of my rankings (between the first ... and the second) ,
way below FireFox and above Chrome, IE, and Edge.

Firefox is on the top of my list too.

I run, and like, 61.0.2, the current release.

No, I don't think that at all. What I think is that there's a
possibility that I may want to get to a web site where that's true.
Just because I haven't run into such a web site doesn't mean that I
never will.

I would try any
other browser first before I use Edge.

I would try what I think is most likely to work.

It also doesn't do any harm to
remove unwanted programs.

For application programs that are not part of Windows, yes, I agree.
But that might be wrong for a built-in program.

These days disk space is of little concern,

Right.

I remove those programs just like I remove any other program I don 't
use or want.

Even though there's no advantage to doing so? Your choice of course,
but I think that's a foolish choice.

I'm glad you haven't had any problems resulting from removing them.
But who knows what the future may bring to those results as Windows
gets new updates.

You may never have any problems as a result of removing them. I'm not
saying you will. My point is simply that there's a risk of having such
programs in the future, and doing something that has no benefit is not
a good bargain.
