Default Print Driver Problem

I have discovered through much toil and testing that the HP LaserJet 6P
printer driver will not work on my computer like it use to. It matters not
whether it is locally attached or through the network or what version of the
driver that I use, and whether it is the driver that comes with XP, is
dynamically downloaded from my Windows 2003 Server, or is the latest and
greatest from HP.com.

I know it is NOT the driver itself. It seems to have something to do with
the settings for the driver on my computer, like something critical has
become corrupted. I have deleted the printer; I have changed drivers; I
have changed ports; I have changed the printer to be a network printer; I
have deleted things in the registry that looked like 6P settings; I have run
registry repair utilities; I have done system restores. All to no avail.

I have temporarily worked around the problem by using the 4P printer driver
instead. Does anybody know how to repair a print driver environment? Is
there a way to rid my system of all remnants of the 6P environment and to
start afresh and anew?

A little help would be much appreciated.
