HDD in vertical position.

Yes. I have a bunch of external disks powered and working in vertical
position (one side) for years. And I just bought one external disk in
which the disk is positioned vertically, in the long direction.

However, I do remember perhaps more than a decade ago some disk I bought
recommending horizontal position or one particular side and not another
for vertical position. Those disks were smaller than 500 GB, so you can
guess their time.
