UAC is something that I would never dare disable. In fact, I set it all
the way to the top. I like being alerted if a piece of software is
looking
to make significant changes to my computer. That's one thing I wish that
users would take more seriously as a way of preventing infections.

I take UAC seriously enough that it's one of the very first things I
disable
on a new machine, along with System Restore and a few other bits and
pieces.

I used to disable System Restore as well but it's saved my ass at some
point to the point that I just let it do its thing. At some point, I just
couldn't be bothered to spare even 1% of my hard disk space to a feature I
was sure I would never need.

Just noticed we can't turn off windows offender. If MicroSnot thinks
you
have had it dissabled for too long it will turn it back on
automatically

If you don't disable it, it will come back, yes.

Or if you don't install another AV product. Even with Defender
disabled,
if no other AV is up and running, then eventually Defender will
re-enable itself. Happened on mine when AVG kept giving me problems. It
(AVG) would work for a while, then it wouldn't update or scan.
Eventually, Defender started itself back up.

I don't remember which build it was, but was probably at least two ago.
With each build, I'd have to uninstall and re-install AVG, so I finally
gave up for now and just run Defender for real time protection.

Wow, I know that I was able to disable all of Windows' awful security in
Vista so it's sad to hear that it won't allow it in 8.1. Oh well, I
guess
it's a matter of living with it or getting a decent anti-virus which
pleases us in its place. I get one free from my ISP (McAfee) so I can't
complain.

My complaint would be, if you're going to provide some kind of anti
malware
program free of charge, at least make it something that I want. My ISP
has
been offering McAfee for quite a number of years, but it's easy to say
no.

I don't find it all that bad and it has gotten decent reviews so I'll
just continue using it since it doesn't hurt my bankbook at all.

And I thought this is how we developed lists of "bad" AV products.

If your ISP offers it, it *must* be bad :-)
