What does it mean when the CD/DVD is blank no matter what?
I put known good CD data discs and DVD data discs in the CD/DVD
drive but on Windows D:\ just shows up as blank. D:\ is definitely the cd/dvd rom drive. The "device manager" shows it as "working properly". Here are some screenshots showing this: http://i.cubeupload.com/UF2i4r.gif How do I test WHY the cdrom/dvd unit isn't reading data discs? |

You might try cleaning the optics first. If still no good then try burning a full disc and see if it can read that one. |

Test the optical drive using another OS. A Linux LiveCD is an option. A clean install of Windows on a spare hard drive, would be another OS to do the test from. Chances are, the problem is a software problem on the current OS. Like, an UpperFilter driver that should be removed. And it's not really a hardware problem at all. Paul |

Might have gotten out of alignment? Optical drives start getting like that after a while, especially when they aren't used much anymore. It could be that the CD/DVD in question isn't formatted as UDF (Universal Disk Format) file system. Did you use some external DVD/CD software package to create this disk? I am thinking of old Nero type packages. They were terrible because disk created in one machine weren't compatible on another unless you install a special program from them to enable UDF on all machines on which you intent to use the disk. -- Windows 10 https://app.box.com/representation/file_version_74032471857/image_2048/1.png?shared_name=jx7x8bblrf906i7ktrvu4kn89t48b43b |
