Default Live Update problems

Live Update tells me I have many outstanding updates, and
asks me to click on "add" to allow me to pick those I
want. The screens have no item "add" to click on. What
have I missed?
Also, I just reinstalled Windows XP from the original
disc, after a major repair. However, the screen says I
have no Service Packs or other critical items waiting.
How did I luck out? Or is something wrong here?
